Thought the '3 months later...' content might be observations about evidence of his coaching to be seen yesterday.

Anyone?

Well the clearances and contest ball sounded great!

So, yesterday the Western Demons put on a prematch function. It was emceed by our awesome chant-leader and face of the DA, Ryan.

In the Q&A with Jonesy, Ryan asked the question “Can you see yourself as a head coach sometime in the future?” Without hesitation Jonesy said he does. He said he hopes to take over as head coach of us in two or three years.

At first everyone thought it was tongue-in-cheek, but it wasn’t. Jonesy was dead serious. It was super awkward.

Goodys on notice. But seriously Jones needs a good 10 years in the system before a senior coach role beckons.

… which makes what he said silly as well as disrespectful.

Brad Green was the guest speaker and spoke just prior to the Q&A. Not sure if he was still there when Jonesy made the comment but if he was, and he heard it, I’d like to think he’s gonna have a word with Jonesy.

You always have good insights @Ghostwriter . Thank you. From what I hear, and to my surprise, Jonesy is well regarded by the players and is considered a strong addition to the coaching group. I believe it was Paul Roos who started the process for Jonesy to understand the depth of meaning underpinning leadership with the confidence to soar above being a brute footballer.

That Roos provided this mentorship was important. Jonesy was a player leader during truly dark days. It would have been so easy for this period to be mentally scarring for the remainder of his life. That he confronted darkness and now becoming the man with head coach aspirations speaks volumes to Jonesy's character.

Goody has also been important to Jonesy's growth. Roos was old school, aloof with the players. Goody brought authenticate player connection representing today's leadership.

Given his years playing together and understanding his human strengths and weaknesses, I think Jonesy is ideal for Clarrie's mental health battle.

BTW, did you see the clip of Trac being interviewed after the Eagles game? Trac was brilliant regarding Clarrie, speaking of the importance of men showing vulnerability fighting mental demons. There's a raw honesty about Trac that's endearing.

Godspeed good Jonesy.

IMO the main reason we've fallen in a hole the last 12 months is due to the fact we've failed to develop our young players. There's not one player at Casey pressing for senior selection.

Most of our young talent have failed to progress their skills.

Again, IMO, our assistant coaches, including Jones, are largely to blame.

If Max gets injured we're no hope.

We've got three young ruckmen on our list. Plus TC. Are any capable of playing first ruck? No way.

I'm predicting our next win will come against North in round 15.

I said 'young talent', not 'good young talent'.

In the last 12 months have we seen any marked improvement in the skills of Laurie, Jefferson, Adams, Verrall , Fullerton, Howes, and Brown?

IMO minimal if any.

JvR was playing better footy in 2023. Sparrow ...?

We do have good young talent and they'll progress irrespective of who is coaching them, as did the likes of Clarrie and Trac.

I'm saying that our overall record as regards player development is poor.

Let's see if we can develop AJ, Henderson, Sharp, Kentfield and Culley.

That's 25% of our list I've mentioned, all under 25.

Just getting a senior game with the MFC is hardly a measure that your skills have improved. It may just be we've no one else on the list to fill that spot.

If Max goes down we're likely to play TC.

He's older than Max, at his fourth club, and I'm not sure he'll perform any better at the Dees than at his previous clubs.

Then again, maybe our coaches can turn it around for him.

Certainly were Nate to do his full apprenticeship and become a fully credentialed and succesful coach it would be a fabulous emotional story, but be aware that favorite champion sons don’t necessarily make great or even good coaches - Hird, Buckley, Voss spring immediately to mind.

Bang, bang, bang. The crux of our problem. Since 2021, our senior/best players have regressed (with the notable exceptions of Max and TMac) and the tier under them have not improved to the degree necessary to take up the slack. It's why we are in the bottom third of the ladder.

We play North in round 18 (not 15) and I would be bitterly disappointed if we have to wait 9 weeks for our next win.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
