    Saw him first hand a few weeks ago in the Foster v Fish Creek game, did some nice things (one being taking a ruck clearance, running 10-15 and then kicking it from about 65/70m (wind assisted).

    He was very much in and out of the game, but everything he did was pure class and stood out like 🐕⚽️.

    This kid has plenty of tricks, speed and can do freakish things. Attitude and effort at times are the question marks. My youngest played against Wes all the way through community footy and I coached him at development level for 1 year. His dad (also Wes) was also a handy player

    I'd be surprised if Ollie is in Smillie's class. Was a very good junior player though.

    No doubt you're right Whatwhat. If I were to think out loud (of course I wouldn't), I'd wonder if he lacked urgency at the contest. I'd hope I was flat out wrong.

    AFL QLD team Academy prospects Dan Annable, Beau Addinsall and Zeke Uwland proved their 2025 draft credentials with exciting showings in the Marsh AFL National Futures curtain-raiser at the MCG.

    The annual under-17s clash on Grand Final morning featuring players eligible for the 2025 draft saw players from across the country split into teams named after retired stars Dyson Heppell and Rory Sloane.

    And it was the Heppell side that came away with the win, kicking the last five goals of the game to clinch a seven-point victory.

    Annable is tied to Brisbane's Academy and collected 27 disposals and five inside-50s for the Heppell team, while fellow midfielder Ollie Greeves was important with 31 touches and seven marks.

    Tom Burton (26 disposals) also produced some eye-catching moments and Sam Cumming was in everything with 24 disposals, 11 tackles and a goal. West Australian prospect Charlie Banfield kicked three goals while Josh Lindsay, who had 20 disposals, was awarded the best player for his team.

    A late goal to exciting tall forward prospect Archie Ludowyke capped the comeback, while the versatility of Willem Duursma again shone with 20 touches and eight marks.

    Addinsall, a member of Gold Coast's Academy, had a game-high 34 disposals for the Sloane team, while Uwland, also headed to the Suns through their Academy where his brother Bodhi had a breakout season, kicked two goals from 22 disposals in a typically polished display. Addinsall was named his team's best player.

    Midfielder Jack Dalton had 21 disposals and kicked 1.2, Riley Onley had 20 disposals and kicked a goal and very promising tall Cooper Duff-Tytler collected 13 disposals and 10 hit-outs.

    Attached to two clubs through the Suns Academy and also Melbourne as a father-son prospect (Jeff, 236 games), White played the deepest defensive role and was often involved one way or another. A couple of times he got caught behind but when in front he was able to quell any attack with a great leap and timed his spoiling well. Playing it safe with his disposals which were often neat, short passes while on the last line, he clunked five marks – one contested – and was among the better players on his side despite having the least disposals, showing his impact in pressure situations.

    25 in 2025: A look ahead to next year’s top prospects

    One of those prospects happens to be Kalani White:-

    White has an interesting decision on his hands next year, being tied to Gold Coast’s academy but also eligible to nominate under father-son rules for Melbourne. The son of former Dee and Docker, Jeff, Kalani is a developing tall capable of playing at either end of the ground. His mobility is impressive and he seems to have found a home down back, where he was an Under 16 All-Australian. White also featured once for the Allies this year, while averaging eight disposals and four marks for the Suns Academy.

    I just can't get my head around considering next year's crop and all the unfamiliar names so soon after this year's draft has only just been completed.

    It's like waking up on New Year's Day and thinking about what you'd like to get for Christmas.

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
