If the rumours about Jackson are true, one of the reasons why he might like to come back is because he maintains a good relationship with Goody.

Coming into the year I thought we can recover and play finals but I thought this list was past a flag run.

So my big test for Goodwin was more around the relationships at the club and keeping the right people happy, and recovering the Petracca situation.

Despite the rumblings - I think CP5 is back on track and our lowly position is more about injuries, and our lack of executing our new game plan due to skill level and normal teething issues.

So I am ambivalent on Goodwin. He is not a cancer so if he stays I don’t mind - however, this list shouldn’t be 3-6 so I can get why a decision would be made to move on.

How do you view the culmination of the post flag-era and the role of Goodwin? Do you lean towards that the culmination of failings, coupled with a likely bottom four finish this year, mean Goodwin’s position is untenable? Or do you think we tread water until a suitable replacement is found, even if that means Goodwin coaches next year too?

We are at Round 9.


If we were to finish bottom 4 Goodwin would be lucky to stay, that’s just the reality of being a coach with a relatively strong list.

I've asked Hawthorn supporting friends and colleagues and then checked on the Hawks Bigfooty Forum. They were all in furious agreement that all those players are clear best 23, or in Lewis's case best 23 when fit.

Lewis hasn't played consistent footy in 2 years.

How is he a major out?

The far bigger priority heading into 2026 is to bring a top quality footy manager into the fold.

This will have a significant impact on all aspects of the footy department, including game plan, coaching, fitness, list management and drafting. Which is basically a combination of all the things everyone on Demonland loves to [censored] about.

A change of senior coach will not have as much impact.

My biggest worry is that members are voting with their feet (and their wallets). Currently 51,872 - down 10,400 from this time last year. That is extremely worrying - surely the biggest drop-off in nominal or percentage terms for AFL clubs. I hear the Club has stopped doing volunteer member call-outs. Are we just waiting for things to turn around on the field? What happened to our Member Engagement Committee? - supposedly a key recommendation from last year's "external governance review"? We probably all know someone who may have dropped off the list so engagement with existing members may encourage the "leavers' to re-sign?

Because replacing a senior coach, especially a senior coach who is loved and respected by his playing group, and who has won a flag, with an unknown proposition, more often than not leads to going backwards on the field. While that is not always the case, it certainly is the stronger odds.

Whereas replacing a footy manager who can really align and better all aspects of the footy department, and perhaps attract better fitness staff or assistant coaches, will have a more immediate and greater impact, with a far lower risk of causing turmoil within the playing group.

The impact that even Yze, as a senior assistant, made to our club in 2021 was immediate and significant. I believe this can be true for a footy manager in 2026 too.

Ppl need to get over this ridiculous supposition an AFL is some sort of social construct. It's a professional sporting BUSINESS.

Local footy clubs are social entities. AFL is for those in big boys pants and if any and all can't abide by the expectations and rewards/redundancy that they demand then they're in the wrong business, or certainly the wrong level.

All these changes would have to depend on length of contract in all these positions.

  • Selwyn Griffiths End of contract?

  • Alan Richardson End of contract?

  • Anybody Else feel free to fit in.

Notice how I mentioned an unknown quantity?

Suns were very lucky to land a 3 time premiership coach. But guess what, a 4 time premiership coach hasn’t helped North.

If we could replace Goodwin with a proven leader, then of course you’d consider it. But the reality is that most of the options out there are unknown and could just as much be the next Neeld as they could be the next McRae.

Would you want to bring in Hinkley who with arguably a better list has won 0 flags? Or Horse who, with all the academy talent he got, won as many flags as Goodwin has?

The grass is not always greener, and it’s easy to lose sight of how many coaches there are in the AFL right now who have achieved a lot less than Goodwin. Even with better lists or better advantages from the league.

I’m agnostic on Richardson to a degree, but I think the other two a spot on (obviously an exception would apply if Goodwin miraculously turned our fortunes around, I just don’t see that happening at all).

Griffiths is a must though; injury management, rehabilitation and physical performances seem to have been significantly detrimentally effected since he has taken the reigns.

True, but if fit and available he'd be their number 1 key forward. I'm sure Hawthorn are planning for Lewis in September.

We had the biggest drop off members in 2024.

Two years in a row is a massive concern.

You actually highlight the implied message though the answer may not necessarily be a 3 times flag winner.

In the case of the Suns their trajectory was 'this tain not going ( well going nowhere of interest) " Then along came someone with a different approach and different style and has crafted a very different team out of essentially the same ( in the main ) list.

There is the guts of a decent list at Melbourne, though there's some decent pruning that could be had. It's more about what one person envisions and builds as opposed another.

I don't think anyone is suggesting SG can't coach but it certainly appears from my seat that he's exhausted what works, as he can create it. There has always been some interesting aspects to his approach. Some were cruelly erased the AFL and rules. Some are again effective but only as components of a game plan. An entire one that works well and consistently is absent.

What once worked now doesn't. Perhaps it was only ever going to achieve success for a limited period and that's passed. Bit like fashion in a way.

    And just like that, we’re Narrm again. Even though the annual AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round which commemorates the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture to our game has been a welcome addition to our calendar for ten years, more lately it has been a portent of tough times ahead for we beleaguered Narrm supporters. Ever since the club broke through for its historic 2021 premiership, this has become a troubling time of the year for the club. For example, it all began when Melbourne rebranded itself as Narrm across the two rounds of the Sir Doug Nicholls Round to become the first club to adopt an Indigenous club name especially for the occasion. It won its first outing under the brand against lowly North Melbourne to go to 10 wins and no losses but not without a struggle or a major injury to  star winger Ed Langdon who broke his ribs and missed several weeks. In the following week, still as Narrm, the team’s 17 game winning streak came to an end at the hands of the Dockers. That came along with more injuries, a plague that remained with them for the remainder of the season until, beset by injuries, the Dees were eliminated from the finals in straight sets. It was even worse last year, when Narrm inexplicably lowered its colours in Perth to the Waalit Marawar Eagles. Oh, the shame of it all! At least this year, if there is a corner to turn around, it has to be in the direction of something better. To that end, I produced a special pre-game chant in the local Narrm language - “nam mi:wi winnamun katjil prolin ambi ngamar thamelin amb” which roughly translated is “every heart beats true for the red and the blue.” >y belief is that if all of the Narrm faithful recite it long enough, then it might prove to be the only way to beat the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba on Sunday. The Lions are coming off a disappointing draw at Marvel Stadium against a North Melbourne team that lacks the ability and know how to win games (except when playing Melbourne). Brisbane are, however, a different kettle of fish at home and have very few positional weaknesses. They are a midfield powerhouse, strong in defence and have plenty of forward options, particularly their small and medium sized players, to kick a winning score this week after the sting of last week’s below par performance.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

    There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

  • CASEY: Footscray

    At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

  • POSTGAME: Hawthorn

    Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
