Great to get a win for Kozzie's 100th and glad he was able to hit the scoreboard. He had really gained some consistency this year which is due to him spending more time in the middle. He doesn't need to be the matchwinner every week, just needs to play his role and then take the chances when they come like the last 2 weeks.

Crazy to think he's still only 22/23.

Well said.

Everything he touches turn to gold.. the goal he set up was elite...

Well done on your 100th koz!

So we're still making excuses for Petty's performance (selection) because

A) lack of preseason/injuries

B) he's playing out of position

It's not all on him, I get it, it's as much on team selection that causes him to either play unfit or play in a position where he's ineffective.

But we can't rely on these issues when analysing performance. If you're not fit or in position where you need to play, then let's call it out.

He was monstered by Draper and not much more effective in the forward line v Mackay.

Out muscled, out bodied, out worked across the ground.

I understand the selection and Petty probably did his best to do what was asked of him.

But he's not a ruckman bootlace and it's not a solution going forward.  Petty's 'ruck craft' especially at boundary throw-ins was very hard to watch at times. Gave his best but it did not work.

JVR showed much more in the way of agility and body on body stuff. Draper had 9 possessions in the first quarter while against Petty and maybe 10 for the rest of the game after that.

Without JVR we don't win this game, period. When he went in there we won the clearances 19-11 and controlled the important part of the game. Annoyed that I've already done my votes because I'd definitely have him in there if doing them now.

Even Bomber fans are saying it. (From bomberblitz.com:)

Umpires gave us 3 goals when the game was truly over
Disgraceful evening up I have ever seen- umpire no 22 take a bow

You aren't a supporter.

What game did you watch tonight?

Ok champ, tell me who was in your bottom 3 for us then?

I’m baffled…is Cox a right or left footer? He took a set shot with his left, thought I was seeing things. And Windsor absolutely destroyed him in the first half.

Two things we need from Kozzie long term.

1. To get to 200 games

2. To have a very, very big family

Draper had no influence tonight, job done.

Petty, JVR and Disco quelled his influence.

So Essendon mids were all over us were they?

Come on guys give him some credit for disrupting his influence on the game.

Can you imagine if we lost?

f me sideways, hard to please some of you.

It was a great team performance and great coaching, but Petty was terrible. I don't think that's a controversial take. He was mosntered in the 1st quarter and only when JVR went to 1st ruck in 2nd quarter did we start to really get on top in the middle. Even then Petty didn't offer much as a forward target, rarely winning or halving the contest and letting his opponent win the ball. He had 3 kicks and 3 handballs.

The team were very impressive and I've praised them in multiple posts, it's ok to be critical as well if other parts of the game which weren't as good, especially when it is not a one off and it is not just being negative for negatives sake. It's part of the discussion.

Turning to JVR in the ruck absolutely quelled Drapers substantial influence, even if I thought Draper still had his number as well, but wasn't as effective with JVR on him.

If we didn't make that switch it would have been 6 goals the other way.

The unfortunate thing is petty was poor as both a ruck and a fwd option.

It's funny seeing people on here bagging out other posters for being negative when they are the most negative posters here themselves!

Was it a wet night there?

How did kolt go?

Kolt was very good again, providing an option and banging the ball forward at all costs in the slippery conditions.

Rained pretty heavily just before the first bounce and for parts of the first and 2nd quarters. A bit of rain in the 2nd half but not as heavy.

Cox is overrated. He's fit but when has he ever shown he can play

Awww who hurt you, fellah?

You’re entitled to your opinion etc. but you can’t afford us the joy of beating that revolting team even just for tonight?? If you’re truly a Melbourne supporter you’d be enjoying the win right now. Bash HP all you like (you’re gonna anyways) but right or wrong, can’t you just leave it alone for tonight?????

The win is great, especially over them.

Certainly not the only one here calling out HP's game...

If you want to enjoy it without critiquing things, that's fine. But I'm not going to say that everything is all dandy when it isn't

17 pressure acts and if I had to guess they were mostly on the higher scale of pressure act.

A good game from Koz and another reason why we won.

Didn’t get to see all the game due to family commitments. But from what I did see it looked like a good hard game and we played well for a big chunk of it. Pickett’s influence on games at the moment is remarkable he’s really lifting our team performances and I think people are being a bit harsh on McVee saying he will become elite. I think he already is, he’s a gun and one of our best players already.

Great win, love it.

Some people can't hack it. i don't know why they come onto a web forum to discuss the game with others.

It's ok to win and still be critical.

That's what successful clubs do. Teams like the c*ts and h*wks didn't create premiership dynasties by sitting on their laurels and not being critical about performance.

That's all I'm doing and that's all I suggest you do.

Soak up the win by all means, but always look for areas for improvement.

So proud of the group for tonight.

Had to beat the umpires, the commentators on Essendon the whole night, the media writing us off the whole week, no max no tracc.

(Aside from the last 7 minutes that definitely got the heart rate going) in tough conditions, the will to keep cracking in at the contest made me just so unbelievably proud.

Great performance

JVR into the ruck was the difference

Please don’t ruck Petty again

Cudos to Goody l thought Fullerton was harshly done by

Would love Chunk to give us a bit more credit when he commentates, always seems to talk our opponents up

Only just got home. Just wow. It was a pleasure to be at the ground to watch us tonight. Even giving up a few goals towards the end when I think Rick was off the ground doesn't take the shine off how well we played as a collective unit.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
