PJ and White

Guys.

PJ should be entrusted with the majority of the ruckwork. He is bigger, stronger and younger. The new rules suit him more. Every quarter should start with him in the centre.

I say this respectfully, as Jeff White has bled for the Club in every way.

He should get at least equal time because he needs to develop in this position and this is now a development year.

PJ is proving worthy of more responsibility, and considering the season is shot, I would love to see how he plays against the opposition’s best ruckman when they are fresh. Look at Taylor and Campbell at Hawthorn, the lessons they learned last year when Everitt was injured is proving invaluable this season.

He has been pretty impressive so far and is a hell of a lot better kick then Jamar.

yes pj has taken a massive step forward and is taking some good grabs and getting a bit of the ball around the ground

i reckon white is one of the players more blatantly affected by the handball regime at the moment. he has such a good/damaging kick that must be utilized

By the way, who knew Jeff White had the league's highest possession count for any ruckmen in the league this year?

your [censored] me arent you?

My dad dies a little inside when he sees White give off an unnecessary handball and he makes sure to tell me all about it.. and everyone around us :P

jeff white would be valuable in taking ruck contests in the forward half of the ground then if he does muff it PJ could be down back to help out the backs and possibly start some forward thrusts from the back and White would be freer to run between chf and into space in the forward 50. Jeff white is a great mark also don't forget. Also when we get Rivers & Whelan back our backline will look soo soo much stronger then look out. Dunn needs a few more pies to beef up a bit and he will be a massivley great player too. Give us 1 more year and we will turn this around so much it wont be funny.

No, he isn't. I knew that stat and was not surprised at all. Very underrated is Whitey.

yep that stat holds up.. but again... add context to it. what its saying is as a "follower" hes getting the pill.. as a ruckman he's getting beaten. So what exactly is his role out there ?

Yeah, good point. That said, I think he is in the top 5 ruckman for hit outs this year. Don't quote me on that, but I think thats right. So he must doing an OK job based on all this.

As for PJ, his year has been tremendous so far. I am rapt with his improvement.

on white...was good to see him take contested marks ...for me he often does but many say he takes the easy ones. Credit where due...it sjust his rucking that is the questionable item of the teams puzzle for me.

We all die a little inside when we go watch Melbourne play. They suck the life right out of you.

For every close loss we have, I lose about 2 years of my life.

In all seriousness, PJ is actually coming along better than I expected. His ruckwork makes me laugh, only because he seems to have very little idea how to go about it, but given where we are with our season and with our rucking situation, I wouldn't mind seeing him ruck for 50% of the game.

In the past, when Jeff White wasn't rucking, it was very noticeable. These days, I'll see White running on the boundary, and it would only then register that he isn't taking the centre bounces. It makes little difference to our clearance-winning.

One of PJ or Jamar will need to get the flick at the end of the year. Jamar has had 2 years to prove himself, now it's PJs turn.

So far, we know who is winning the 'influence around the ground' votes. Mind you, PJ doesn't do a whole lot. But I do cheer when he takes a contested over-head mark, and I let everyone around me know about it. Sure, they all think I'm crazy, but it warms my heart :D

You'd surely have to say it's Jamar going, wouldnt ya?

PJ's rucking may not be great yet, but he's still learning the trade, and IMO, he isnt all that much worse than Jamar in the taps. And he seems to be getting better each week. He knows how to mark overhead now too! How good is that?

I hate to say i told ya so, but i always knew he was going to be better than Jamar.

Jamar just has no idea, rucking and around the ground, or how to play football. MUST be gone at the end of the year.

Looks like you'll be dead before the season's over then. :o

I love White, I am not entirely convinced in PJ but I love Jamar. Jamar still deserves some more time, he is a big bulky bloke and it wouldnt harm us to have more like him. White isnt done and dusted yet and he gets some poor delivery which doesnt help, he always gets those crappy sideways/backwards balls given to him

when Melbourne look good it is when Jeff White is used as the link man down the middle corridor... he looks rank when running around the flanks and getting cheap kicks!!

he has a solid pair of hands without being brilliant, is usually a beautiful kick of the footy - both short and long and is usually a good decision maker... his handball yesterday was ordinary but he was far from being our worst!!

PJ or hightower has come on in leaps and bounds - some confidence has been shown to him by the coach.. he was important in the last quarter yesterday and was surprised that he was not sued up forward more.. big body and is becoming better at throwing it around...

jamar's kicking is a concern for mine - he also needs to show some more mongrel and initiate body contact.. he is a lot bigger than others!!

good point bub ...

white could be a fantastic midfielder in the goodes mould ... we just need a ruckman of the 200+cm 105kg variety.

one of the stranger things ive read on this site

Of course he has skill or he wouldnt be on the list

[/

godders has no skills and he has no skill.. look mate jamar is seriously a shocking footballer! he disposals are worse and has no impact watsoever

I used to think that perhaps Godfrey was maybe one of the weaker links of the team in terms of skill but his hardness of the ball was good however he has changed my opinion this yaer. Godfrey has been around longer than Jamar and perseverence with him has paid off so I think the same can happen to Jamar. He has the type of body that we need just needs to channel his skills a bit

  • REPORT: Richmond

The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

  • CASEY: Richmond

The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace. They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
