Melbourne bring disappointment down to an artform

Seriously, has any other team in the past decade or so led it's supporters through such a rollarcoaster ride? We always have these high expectations and are ALWAYS disappointed. Firstly, this year was meant to be our year, but an 0-7 start. That was disappointment 1. Then secondly, we were meant to be in for a good, hard fought contest against WC, only to play probably one of our worst games in 20 years. That was disappointment 2.

Now, in the situation we are in, a finishing anywhere between 9th-12th would be disappointing when we could finish 13th-16th and get a good, high and solid draft pick.

My bet is that we will finish 10th, capping off disappointment number 3 for the year.

Who would have thought losing would lead to so much disappointment that it would therefore transform into a positive and set us up for even more disappointment through winning...

to finish 10th we will need to win 9-10 games of the next 14....

i think more likely we will finish 13th or lower. that equates to a top 4 draft pick to add to our talented youngsters. next year, with a season more experience into our younger players along with the realization which players aren't up to standard (ala wheatley, miller, jamar, ward, bizzel) we will be a better off team for next year.

lets be completely honest. what is better? coming 5-8th for 5 years, and not getting top quality draft picks...or unluckily bottoming out one year (due to many factors...injuries being a significant one) and then being stronger and more likely for a top4 finish the year after?

They couldn't beat a Croydon under 14's side at the moment.

It could be worse I think. Geelong for instance. I've always had a soft spot for the Cats as my dad supports them and took me to some of their games a young lad. And some of the stuff there fans have been put through! If we had lost a semi final in Nick Davis style I'd get in a bath with a toaster!

Then you've got St.Kilda who are ultra disappointing with there gun list. Hawthorn have never been great since I've been supporting (missed there glory period thank God) and then there's good old Richmond - well, at least we're not Richmond! But yes, we have been difficult to support! Not the worst, but not the best.

If I remember correctly, Richmond's last premiership was 27 years ago. Ours was 43 years ago. Hell of a difference.

Also, you seem to have missed my point. Richmond have been consistently "bad" for 20+ years; they're not "up and down". They havnt set any standards.

Melbourne hasn't been "bad" for the entire time without a premiership, but the past 20 years have been disappointing; they NEVER live up to what they're thought to. They touch what people say they should reach, and then fall off the ladder. That's disappointment. To me, Richmond and Melbourne are on different wave lengths. Richmond always have the expectations of being a mediocre football club, whereas we are expected to be the inconsistent club that never achieves what it should. To me, Melbourne is the more disappointing.

yeah to be negative about it. not many victorian teams go on runs like us either though, which is easier to forget. 11 of 12 last year. 9 of 12 year before. 14 of 18 year before. 10 of 11 in 2000 before the granny. 8 of 9 before prelim 98.

we definitely have some shocking losing streaks, but we shouldn't forget that we have got on rolls pretty well under danners.

the roller-coaster ascertion is true though. richmond have not had the roller-coaster we've had, though not saying that that's a better thing, at least we've had finals action.

Yeah, because tens of thousands of dollars i've spent on this football club doesnt justify complaining about performance which I'm paying to be a part of.

Investing in a sporting club is like investing in a business; you expect success and nothing less. To not winge about the consistent failture of something you invest your hard earned money would be an insult to yourself.

Well, I actually meant my family, since the 60s, on memberships. Now it's passed down for (I pay for myself, sisters and mum). My family (starting with my dad) have paid well over 10k on membership. It probably even exceeds 20k.

yeah it's true ey. sounds so crazy when a number is put on it, but if you add up all the merchandise and memberships etc. it is quite an insane amount of money. but we do it, and we'll keep doing it...god knows why

not so sure though, i don't buy my memberships for 'success' although i guess if i take it down to its details, that's what membership is for.

but at it's most basic, footy is a passtime that we all do to make our lives less dreary. i'd prefer to see the boys play, and lose, rather than not have them play at all. (this is my most diplomatic by the way)

the only people who we should all be critical of is those who don't have memberships, as you are compelteyl right, if you've put the money into the club to help it achieve its goals, you earn the right to display your frustrations however you want

Hate to break it to you but I work with plenty of different businesses and let me tell you they deal with more money than you and whinge a hell of a lot less. You would also know businesses deal with fluctuations. Build a bridge

I'm a student earning 11,000 a year. I could just as easily not buy a membership, but I don't. I still make the sacrifice. I invest. And when you invest, you only expect success.

I know some long suffering supporters of Saints, Tigers, Bulldogs, and Carlton of recent times.

So we are not alone.

Anyway we will see how they go against the Roos.

Overall we havn't been that bad, at least we have played finals.
