It of course doesn’t account for the unpaid frees - we could start a book on how many throws Cripps will get away with Thursday.

Have to be really careful with the non free kicks point in the midfield because we get away with as much as anyone.
Carlton will say the same thing about Oliver and petracca. Christian in particular gets away with a lot.

Forwards are a different case because you wouldn’t dare lay a finger on poor Charlie and Harry.

The Fam and I were at the Carlton end at the final last year, horrendous, so many of them visibly shaking with aggression! There’s passion but that was something else.

25 plus years of being horse**** would have something to do with it. The week after was lovely seeing them [censored] away a 5 goal lead.

Most frees for

Rowell’s 27 is comfortably the most in 2024 so far, clear of Grundy with Soligo and Xerri not far behind.

27 - Matt Rowell (GCS)
20 - Brodie Grundy (SYD)
19 - Jake Soligo (ADE)
19 - Tristan Xerri (NM)
18 - Patrick Cripps (CAR)
18 - Dylan Moore (HAW)

Most frees against

Swans recruit Grundy has mixed 20 frees for with 23 against. Xerri is the other player who features at the top of both lists.

23 - Brodie Grundy (SYD)
19 - Kieren Briggs (GWS)
18 - Toby Nankervis (RIC)
17 - Clayton Oliver (MEL)
17 - Tristan Xerri (NM)
16 - Toby Greene (GWS)

Just hope 15 and 23 are not doing tonight's game Last week neither of them are we won.

People seem to think that in his presser, Voss was talking about the holding the ball rule. It didn't sound like it to me; it sounded like he was whinging about the free kick differential against GC. And if I am right: major hypocrisy.

The 2024 Free Kick Ladder - Round 22

We have a new leader with Essendon sitting on top thanks to a +60 differential.

The Bombers are clear of Brisbane who hold down second position on +50, while Gold Coast has dropped to third on +49.

Making up the top five is Fremantle on +29 and Carlton on +27.

At the other end, it is Richmond on a massive -85. The Tigers have received the fewest free kicks in 2024 while giving away the equal third most.

Second bottom is GWS on -54, with Geelong on -35, North Melbourne on -15 and both Melbourne and Port Adelaide on -14.

A little beef of mine is that our players don't know how to play for free kicks. Ben Brown is a master of it - not cheating, not creating a free when it us not there, but of making sure that the umpire sees it when it is there. I wish more players would do that. Thus, if eg a player is blocked for a run at a mark, they just complain later instead of throwing their arms out and making sure the umpire sees it.

Other teams do it and get the resultant free.

I get amazed by the hawks players physically showing the too high or dropping the ball signs and somehow they seem to convince the umpire.  Maybe it’s the suggestive behaviour theory.  Less verbal. More directive movements.

The 2024 Free Kick Ladder

Who benefits most from umpiring decisions?

The 2024 free kick ladder for the home and away season

Surely, Gerard Whatley should have been right on top of this when he interviewed Kate Roffey on SEN and asked her about Melbourne’s poor culture and lack of discipline that resulted in the team missing out on the finals?

Edited by The Third Eye

What I find really interesting in that table is we're ranked 6th for least frees against.  So we're not giving frees away, but we're sure as hell not being rewarded.  That's the reason for the differential.  It's bogus.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

For a brief period of time in the early afternoon of yesterday, the Casey Demons occupied top place on the Smithy’s VFL table. This was only made possible by virtue of the fact that the team was the only one in this crazy competition to have played twice and it’s 1½ wins gave it an unassailable lead on the other 20 teams, some of who had yet to play a game.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

In my all-time nightmare game, the team is so ill-disciplined that it concedes its first two goals with the courtesy of not one, but two, fifty metre penalties while opening its own scoring with four behinds in a row and losing a talented youngster with good decision-making skills and a lethal left foot kick, subbed off in the first quarter with what looks like a bad knee injury.

  • PREGAME: Geelong

After a one-year reprieve, the Demons return down the freeway to Kardinia Park — the site of both one of our greatest triumphs and one of our darkest days — as they face the Cats under Friday night lights. This one could get ugly. Who comes in, and who comes out?
