Those Essendon junk time goals probably skew a few of the key stat areas as well, as we again appeared to run out of gas.

For sure, partic goals from turnover

I'm not so sure we did run out of gas. Well maybe a bit (though not the to the same degree as against tjhe liuns and roos) - which i think we just have to accept with such a young team.

And i was amazed the so called experts didn't point out that we were off  a six day break to their 8  - Melk sure did in a post match interview when asked about recovering from his first game back after 12 months.

I reckon we lost momentum with those two quick goals and couldn't get it back. The umpiring handed the bombers that momentum. I was quietly pleased we didn't give up any more goals.

Playing devils advocate I am surprised clubs do not rotate players more during the season.

For Non-Victorian teams (WA in particular) travelling every second week have to contend with the proven fatigue of long-haul flights in combination with the demands of the sport. It seems not allowing players to be "resting" forwards or defenders has almost becoming unforgiving and presents a challenge to AFL high-performance teams to plan recovery sessions to ease the burden of players.

For older players injury risk also increases (ie: Max Gawn) and perhaps clubs need to forward plan during preseason to give players rest at specific times during the season to reduce fatigue and also mange there ongoing loading/training requirements?

Some clubs absolutely do exactly that ie manage players, particularly older players - Geelong being the best example.

The cats have done so in earnest since their premiership season. All their older players are rotated and managed.

Burgess and Griffith seemingly have a different philosophy, and play the same core of players through the fatigue.

Though goody did mention a few weeks ago they planned to rest maxy if they were in a position to do so. Funnily enough the decision had been taken out of their hands.

It's worth noting that even if they did manage a senior player tbat player would still have to a full match load on top of normal  training to ensure they maintained the right levels.

Player Rating Review (three quarter time) - Midfield

Tom Sparrow (Mid - Forward 24yo  183cm)

Rnd 5 to Rnd 11 vs Rnd 12 to 18   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

For whatever reason it's fair to say Tom is struggling (statistically) so far this season.  Even the last 6 weeks have seen him drop away in most metrics bar clearances, rebound 50s and tackles inside 50.

In particular his one percenters, tackles and uncontested possessions are down substantially over this latest block.  Intercepts also down by a fair margin.

Clayton Oliver (Mid 26yo  189cm)

Unfortunately no recovery for Clarry over the last 6 weeks.  Dropping away even further and significantly so.  You have to wonder when the bounce / turnaround might commence.  Looking like we may have to wait till 2025 at this point.

Alex having a great season.  A 21% improvement on his 2023 rating so far is no mean feat, no doubt some of that as a result of time spent through the middle.  Holding that form over the last six weeks as well.

Thanks DD the fact that our senior players Max, JV, ANB, TMac, Rick, Spaz and May have all dropped off between rounds 12-18 indicates that they are either increasing their work loads or are starting to fade. Given that they have all dropped off at the same time tells me it is the former. What are your thoughts DD and let’s hope it starts trending back up across the board.

From what i am seeing DZ ... Sparrow has shown a drop off in form as the year's progressed.

With Max i have to admit i did not see a drop away in form in a trend sense in that last six weeks.  More just the odd match, especially his last few.  But a 23% drop (statistically) is substantial so there may be some issue here.

Lever yes but only due to a return from his surgery.  To be expected i guess.  His last game was very good though so maybe he is well on the way back to his early season highs.

Max & Lever are still tracking above their 2023 season ratings as well so that suggests they're still performing at a decent level, even if it has dropped away somewhat.

Jack & Sparrow, not to be confused with the Johnny Depp character,  are a different matter in that their ratings have never quite reached their 2023 levels and are now well below.  While also dropping away further in the last six weeks.

I suspect each player goes through their ups & downs in season DZ.  More than likely soreness, niggles.  For example Jack has had that shoulder stinger popping up in pretty much every other game so far.  That might be inhibiting his ability to train as hard as usual or complete certain contact aspects of training etc?

Shorter breaks between matches might be effecting some of the older boys as well.  It's a very long season and within that season a player's form is probably going to ebb and flow depending on where they sit physically and mentally from match to match.

Personally i don't think we'd be loading up the more senior players with anything too crazy in terms of extras.  In fact i think it may the opposite where they're given individual programs in terms of running and gym loads with the degree of load relating to the time between matches, time played in game the previous week/s, amount of kilometers run in match as well as reflecting their age factor.

Of course we will never really know the truth on any of this given we are a long way from the inner sanctum.  Still, no harm in discussing and hearing different views on these matters.

Kysaiah Pickett (Small Forward  23yo  171cm)

Rnd 7 to Rnd 11 vs Rnd 12 to 18   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

It almost feels like someone or something flicked a switch that turned on an extra cylinder or two in Kozzy's engine.  A 30% increase in the last six weeks ...crazy good result.

Possibly the arrival of the bambino?  Less time spent in the middle and more time in his usual HF role?

Whatever it is, keep it coming!

Rnd 5 to Rnd 11 vs Rnd 13 to 18   +   H&A Season 2023 vs H&A Season 2024

A significant uptick in JVR's rating in the last six weeks.  24%!  Something has clicked yes?

Contested marks, marks inside 50 and goals in particular.

Also worth noting, in our two biggest losses this season (Rnd 10 vs the Eagles & Rnd 12 vs Freo) he did not play

  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.

  • xSc. / Shot: average expected score per shot. This represents the average shot difficulty.
  • Shot Rating: average score above or below expected score per shot at goal.

Notes: Expected scores are calculated by Wheelo Ratings. Each shot at goal is assigned an expected score based on the distance from goal, shot angle, and type of shot (e.g. set shot, general play following contested possession, general play following uncontested possession, ground kick, etc) as a proxy for pressure. The model does not take into account factors like the player, whether the ball was kicked with their preferred or non-preferred foot, and pressure on the player when taking the shot. Rushed behinds are excluded from actual and expected scores.

  • xWin %: win probability based on expected scores.
  • Swing: difference between expected margin and actual margin.
  • xScore: total expected score from all shots taken.
  • +/-: total score above or below expected score.

-17 in stoppage score despite being obliterated in clearances tells me we are still setting up well at stoppage and behind the ball.

However, the -44 from turnover will no doubt be impacted in part by our uncompetitiveness in clearances, which led to the ball being camped in our back half far too much.

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
