For the learned watchers, is Sam van Rooyen any chance of being drafted by us?

Got any comparative stats (18yo or WAFL) for his bro, anyone?

Good kid, plays a lot higher up the ground than JVR, a link up option who really applies a lot of second efforts at ground level.

He’s not at JVRs level but there’s a bit to work with. Think he’ll at a minimum get invited to train with a club over summer.

Like JVR can pinch hit in the ruck, played his footy as a CHF but I wouldn’t mind seeing him tried as a defender. Good athlete, competitive, clean below his knees and decent field kick

Did he play in defence a bit last year?  I thought he was classed as a KPF/KPB coming into this year?

No played all season as a forward, Claremont had a settled defence, even Curtin barely plaid down back

IF, big IF, we were to draft him would the reaction on this site be

- great, they will help keep each other happy staying here

or

- oh no!  they will both got home in a year or so?

Optomists vs pessimists

PS there will of course be the "both are duds - neither won a Coleman or a Brownlow"

If this is to be believed

https://www.wafootball.com.au/news/24511/state-combine-duo-impress-afl-recruiters

Then Van Twoyen ran a way quicker agility time than anyone at the national combine and one of the fastest times in draft history.

If that’s the case I think we’d be really keen on him. We’ve often valued guys with good agility.

Article says we have spoken to him.

If he attacks the ball like his brother, then he'd be worth a look as a rookie project. Hopefully has a cm or two growth left in him.

I'd prefer to take a punt on SVR than keep Schache on the list for another year. No idea why we gave that contract. If Schache is playing in the AFL, even just to cover an injury, we're cooked.

I hope we don't have to sit through another Dylan Grimes experience. Could have and should have.

Conversely, for every Dylan Grimes (and Nick Daicos, Travis Cloke, etc), there are plenty of younger brothers who aren't as successful as their older siblings. A couple of ours that come to mind are Tom Flower and Brian Stynes.

If it’s not already obvious, the difference being that one has a mature AFL body while the other would be a kid not ready for it and who would gain no benefit from being thrown to the wolves.
You’re comparing apples with oranges.

2024 Player Reviews: #36 Kysaiah Pickett

The Demons’ aggressive small forward who kicks goals and defends the Demons’ ball in the forward arc. When he’s on song, he’s unstoppable but he did blot his copybook with a three week suspension in the final round. 2024 Player Reviews: #1 Steven May

The years are rolling by but May continued to be rock solid in a key defensive position despite some injury concerns. It was another strong season from McVee who spent most of his time mainly at half back but he also looked at home on a few occasions when he was moved into the midfield.
