edit: wouldn’t a better chance of 10 years out of somewhere perhaps not quite as talented being a better outcome for the club? 

Good discussion point. Mckercher. Sanders. Leake. All top youngsters this year from Tassie. Do you pick them for 4-5 years and then have the confidence to hold them when the Tassie armada sails in.

    If they're any good the AFL will 100% come up with a package to get them to kick start the Tasmanian team. Special "marketing" salary cap bonus.

    It's pretty rare to have such high quality in the draft from Tamania. They'll be in the perfect age range. It's an irresistible prospect for the AFL.

    I am 99% wanting Sanders as our first pick. We want a quality mid, with pace, elite skills and decision making, and yes who can kick goals.  From this years group, it’s Reid, Mckercher and Sanders.  
    Given Reid and Mckercher are likely to get drafted before our pick, then it’s Ryley Sanders for me. He would be a great addition (even with the Tassie 2028 future hanging out there). 

    Don't need a KPB like O'Sullivan to apprentice May?

    We've gone after Cerra via trade, then tried to trade up for Humprey, so probably a mid on the cards should things align?

    That was before Harrison Petty became a forward.

    I know the mantra is "best available" for developing lists, but with a contending list like ours I think we need to draft for needs.

    Christian Petracca and Jack Viney in the top 8 in the Brownlow, then there's that fellow Oliver.  Andrew Brayshaw's brother is there too and Tom Sparrow on the rise ...

    I wouldn’t value the modern Brownlow as anything other than a bit of marketing for the AFL.

    It's a midfielders medal no doubt, but are you really suggesting that the top 10 - Neale, Bontempelli, N.Daicos, Gulden, Butters, Petracca, Serong, Viney, Cripps and Anderson are a set of "marketing" imposters and not a roll call of the top midfielders in the AFL in season 2023?

    The other unusual aspects to consider are;

    - this isn’t like the risk of Jackson or Kossie getting homesick - there is the lure of being the first marquee player (and very well paid) for the long-awaited new side in their home state

    - the unknown of compensation for losing the player, but I think general consensus is we would get somewhere between ‘nothing’ and ‘not enough’ (most likely less than we’d be compensated if trading a player back to Perth).

     

    If the argument is ‘we need to build for the long term’ then the above two considerations mean it is a hard NO for me.

    If the argument is ‘our window is open’ and ‘we need to recruit for the now’ then surely we use pick 5 to trade in a more established player that offers better immediate value (over the next 4 years).

    Mids are a dime a dozen. If they land in the top 2 or 3 picks I agree they're often more special than others, but KPPs are so much harder to pick outside of the first round.

    O'Sullivan every day of the week. If he gets picked by another club, then maybe a mid comes into the equation, but a Tassie mid is super dangerous. I agree with @old55. We're asking for trouble if we go there.

    We would hope Rivers and maybe even McVee and Bowey move into the midfield next year and then we have Howes coming in to replace them at half back/wing, so unless we have huge injuries which we'd never be able to cover sufficiently no matter who we add to our list, IMV, we're better going for improving areas we're not already elite in.

    With Petty forward, the second tall defender is no longer very good, we're relying on a questionable Tomlinson, an undersized Turner and a developing Adams. A key back that can play now is undoubtedly a key area of need and within 2 years, May will be gone, so we'll be left with Lever and that's it.

    Secondly, with McAdam on his way, we add him to Petty, JVR, Fritta, Kozzy. ANB will likely be in that forward mix too, so there's a spot there for another x factor forward. Chandler is okay, but he's not quick enough, nor does he have enough x factor IMO, so there's another area I'd be targeting list wise. A player to partner Kozzy and tag team out of stoppage and deep forward. If we could somehow land another top 10 pick, I'd love Watson.

    But the midfield as it stands is Oliver, Petracca, Viney, Sparrow, Brayshaw and likely Rivers and potentially McVee and Bowey. I'd much prefer we target a FA for our midfield in 2-3 years, and get either end of the ground sorted in the meantime.

    Each to their own though.

    Our wings are just about done, Gus might have to go back outside. Viney should be eased back from a full time role soon. Tracc will be a forward sooner than later. And there’s no guarantees backs or forwards can be mids.

    Pies have Nick Daicos. Port have JHF. Brisbane have Ashcroft(s). Sydney have Errol. Geelong took a mid top 10 last year.

    And we need run and class. 

    I think it has to be best available. If that lines up with a need then so be it, otherwise there’s no position where an elite player wouldn’t help us. Maybe a one dimensional contested mid wouldn’t be perfect but there’s no one like that in contention as far as I know.

    Not exactly a major point of difference. But may simply be best available.

    If that’s the case , then pass. Need outside , we have too many inside bulls already. Ashcroft, Daicos, Sheezel are all outside players and how the draft has gone last 2 years. We need to get NM compensations pick with 5 and … to target McKercher.

    I'll give you the answer: none

    We need a quick, mostly outside or out/in mid with elite vision and disposal going i50

    McKercher or Sanders look most likely. Hopefully one is available with our first call out, pretty please

    Play with the play book before you play with the personnel 

    they’re not elite disposers of the ball, but they’re not awful and they have been  instructed to kick it quickly to a contest.

    • NON-MFC: Round 09

      Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

    • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

      Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

    • REPORT: West Coast

      On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
