During a bout of insomnia I formulated a side which incorporated a Melbourne side composed solely on Imports:

Backs: Fowler      May    Ingerson

Half Backs: Icke     Lever    Rohde

Centers: Langdon   Wilson   Bizzell

Half Forwards:  Vardy  Moore   Crosswell

Forwards: Pickett, Brown  Shaun. Smith

Rucks: White Vince, Coles

Bench: Clarkson, Gary Baker, Wayne Gordon ( the Best and Fairest winner the year before he died,) Jarrott, Templeton

Emergencies: Cross, Seekamp, Holland,

I had to fit three ruckmen into side - Brownlow Moore, Baker and White and Moore played a season or so at Collingwood as a Forward.

Ben Brown or Templeton:?Brown because he played in a Premiership side.

I'm nominating Diamond Jim for half-back flank. I thought he played well in that position. On a serious note, Alan Johnson and Todd Viney should definitely be there.

Agree 100%: but I had to include Icke and Rhode...

By Imports, I mean players from other AFL clubs.

Don't think Wayne Gordon won a B&F.

Baker certainly did.

You are absolutely correct: he came 3rd in 1980: apologies...

Can Brett Lovett get a spot ? Started his career with Hawthorn U/19s I believe.  Might have played in their Magoos as well before coming to the Demons

Think Jeff Farmer can also be classified as an import with Freo trading their rights to Farmer for Phil Gilbert.

I wondered that as well. He played over 60 games in Hawthorn Reserves. If that was counted, he'd be the first picked. Then there's Ricky Jackson...

Then again, I based the side on players who 'played' for other AFL sides in the Firsts...

Farmer would make my side of Fabulous Melbourne exports...Scully would not be considered for selection...

Also, I forgot about Stephen Powell....And my biggest blunder: Carl Ditterich

Geez, he was good, too.

i would've thought a player could only be considered an 'import' if they played a senior game with another club

That's what I thought and meant.

Handy side, I like it.

I'd go with Brown too. Tough one though because both of them had bad knees when they got to Melb.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
