Not only this but we probably freed up approx $500k of cap space over 2 - 3 years if we consider that Watts would have commanded $400k+ per year while Fritch would have been on ~$150k for his first couple of years.

So we got Fritsch AND the share of Grundy's salary not being covered by Collingwood

Who’s the original LJ?

Liam Jurrah  who could have been the best indigenous player of the last 20 years if not for Neeld..certain players getting him into the booze in China and MFC at the time in  general

Jack Watts is a distant memory. A memory that does not attach any emotion or feeling. Pure detachment.  That must be good. And Luke Jackson evokes the same sentiments.

Both players who gave Dees fans moments of hope and joy. And it's really about the journey as a supporter isn't it, rather than the destination?

The magic of 2021 was, for me, so much better because of the long, relentless path to get there.

Poor old Jack. Yesterdays headline grabber and just an average Joe today. I hope he is doing well.

He's doing well. Made a few million playing footy, got to follow his passion for swimming and other off field pleasures while doing it. And I'm sure continues to do so in retirement

I think Fritsch started his career in the defense?

Luckily our coaches realized he is much better playing as a forward.

He started forward and moved back later in his first year.

Have we beaten them since?

That was Queen's Bday 2016 I think? We beat them again later that season and then beat them Queen's Bday 2017. We also beat them at the Gabba in 2020 but yes, we definitely owe them a few.

Losing to them again this year would be a 'mare.

As long as we win in September I don't care.

How sweet would it would be to be able to have 7-1 bragging rights after beating them in a GF? I can dream right 😈

I think some personalities do very well in tough environments and the players you mentioned fit that bill.  The key to good clubs now though is to create an environment where all personalities can thrive.  The message that comes across frequently when our players talk about our culture now is one that does that. Different personalities are not just tolerated, they are embraced and celebrated. I have no doubt in the world Watts would have been a star right now if he was drafted by us say 3 or 4 years ago.

He also wouldn't have been rushed in and marketed as the saviour while still finishing VCE. He would've been brought through Casey and given the proper preparation before throwing him to the wolves. I think all that contributed to his attitude.

He did love swimming 🏊‍♂️

I think it is kind of funny that for all the glory of picking Fritsch so late in the draft, we actually took Spargo a few picks before him.

Personally, I think Spargo is on the cusp of a breakout, and the more he shows the more he will be used. He is so effective that if his numbers pushed up to even the high teens instead of the current 12ish disposals per game, he becomes a serious menance. He's already getting a goal or goal assist with almost every third disposal!

We may even see our whole game style shift if the Pickett-Spargo-Chandler small forward mix comes together the way I suspect it will.

I loved JW.

I'll say it again.  You can't fly like an eagle when surrounded by turkeys.

Not when you are a turkey that occasionally did eagle cosplay.

  • REPORT: Carlton

I am now certain that the decline in fortunes of the Melbourne Football Club from a premiership power with the potential for more success to come in the future, started when the team ran out for their Round 9 match up against Carlton last year. After knocking over the Cats in a fierce contest the week before, the Demons looked uninterested at the start of play and gave the Blues a six goal start. They recovered to almost snatch victory but lost narrowly with a score of 11.10.76 to 12.5.77. Yesterday, they revisited the scene and provided their fans with a similar display of ineptitude early in the proceedings. Their attitude at the start was poor, given that the game was so winnable. Unsurprisingly, the resulting score was almost identical to that of last year and for the fourth time in succession, the club has lost a game against Carlton despite having more scoring opportunities.

  • CASEY: Carlton

The Casey Demons smashed the Carlton Reserves off the park at Casey Fields on Sunday to retain a hold on an end of season wild card place. It was a comprehensive 108 point victory in which the home side was dominant and several of its players stood out but, in spite of the positivity of such a display, we need to place an asterisk over the outcome which saw a net 100 point advantage to the combined scores in the two contests between Demons and Blues over the weekend.

  • POSTGAME: Carlton

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.
