Just as a side note, are the Bulldogs and their fans the greatest over-celebrators in the history of the game. They are labelling it as a “historic win” and Bevo said it was “monumental”. They’ve posted black and white images of Bont and Bevo embracing in the change rooms. You’ve got Weightman interviewing after the game saying they can win it all. Yep, he actually said that. For a team that is one loss away from missing the eight, what an absurd thing to say. You’d think they’d learn

The win of the century. I'm surprised there weren't red, white and blue streamers dropping from the ceiling at the end.

Matty Lloyd just highlights two or three things that went wrong.

For most of the game we did things pretty right.

He could have easily had picked some  mistakes the Bulldogs made earlier as well.

Its all perspective.

He lost me when he said Brayshaw was just just outside waiting for the easy ball (as he does)   As he does????

Brayshaw is probably one the most courageous players  in the whole comp!

It really isn't

In fact i predicted this very pattern ie we will struggle between round 11 and round 19.

I even predicted in the game day thread how this game would pan out, And bar the final result, I got it right (i had us just holding off the late surge).

As you note, we have clearly not been running out games in the ladt two months. That is obvious- to both the eye and the numbers

Some posters are now starting to try and explain that by suggesting we are not fit enough, inferring Griffith has not been as effective as Burgess, even though the pattern of the seson has almost been identical.

And perhaps they are correct.

If they are, then this season is toast. If we are not fit enough now, there is zero chance we are going to be fit enough, relative to the other premiership contenders, come finals.

But, fortunately they are in all likelihood wrong.

Believe it, or dont belive it. But i have zero doubt, just like last season, are fatgued because of the loading phase.

And we will see as soon as next week whether I'm right.

If we are not fit enough, there is no chance we stick with freo, one of the fittest sides in tbe AFL.

But i predict we will come and apply sustained pressure all game. We will be energised and 'running on top of the ground'

And we will be too strong and too much for freo to handle. Freo will simply not be able to go with us.

The supposed fitness issues won't get mentioned again for the rest of tbe seaon.

And the turn around won't be because we - insert your favourite magic bullet here (my favourite is found our 'hunger'). It will because we are in the tapering phase of our periodisation program.

In the last couple of months we have been at our mid climb camp tinkering with our equipment and getting our preparation right for the push to the summit.

That push starts next week.

Go redlegs.

Binman,

I'm glad you are so confident - I think it's rubbing off a little.

I've taken another look at the results from last season, and you are absolutely right, they are incredibly similar to this year. In 2021 we went 9-0, and then lost 4, drew 1, won 4, including of course, a loss to the Bulldogs in the corresponding round 19 game.

The only difference I see at the moment is that the run home this season is far more challenging. Rounds 20-23 comparisons below

2021 vs 2022

- Suns (Docklands) / Dockers (Perth)

- Eagles (Perth) / Magpies (MCG)

- Crows (MCG) / Blues (MCG)

- Cats (Kardinia Park) / Lions (Gabba)

I think this is where the mystery sits with me - even if we come out of our loading phase, I'm not sure how we will perform in a series of tough games, coming off the back of 5-6 tough games. Based on your comments, I'm feeling more positive that we will starting performing better and running out games as we saw us do last year.

In regards to other comments by 'Landers around game plan, no plan B, low in50 tackle count, etc, all of those issues for me are addressed by our fitness. We thrive on a game of sustained pressure - which doesn't cut it against the best teams if you're 5% off.

I'm fascinated to see how the next 4 weeks go, and haven't lost hope.

Cheers,

Being courageous and waiting for the easy ball is two completely different things.

And little ole muscled up Mattie was probably one of the most "free kicks given to" in the comp.

Lloyd was right on all of those plays. Angus was banking on us winning the footy, we didn’t and we got punished.

His message is that we aren’t doing the things we were last year and I agree. It can tighten up quickly and we can alter our trajectory but he is right.

I  think we're losing a bit by having Gus as our loose defender but a poor kick, Salem playing in tight and not being our 'quarterback'  anymore, and JJ on the wing where his defensive skills sometimes hurt us.

Bowey back in. Gus to the wing. Use Salem more. JJ to the bench  to be more a utility type.

Couldn’t agree more. I’ve been banging on about this for weeks to family and friends, ever since Salem returned to the side.

Gus/Ed as our starting wingmen is a winning formula. We gain defensively with (i) Salem/Bowey being more complementary and assuming greater responsibility and (ii) Gus getting back deeper and intercepting - as a winger - more than Jordon as well.

JJ has had a very good year but Brayshaw is better in that position, and better under heavy pressure, which is only going to increase now.

If I bumped this thread from same time last year no one would be able to tell which was 2021 and which was 2022. I encourage people to skim through to get an idea of where we were at same time last year and how quickly things can change once we got momentum heading to September.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
