Yeah almost impossible not to like Brisbane. My great uncle was a Roy boy, no qualms with them winning it if we don't

How about Joe Daniher for starters.

It's changed a lot in the last 5 years. The ground is leveled out and the grounds lights went up 2 weeks ago and all their facilities and admin buildings are well on their way, I believe completion is next year looks great!

Brisbane like us rely heavily on the AFL for financial support. I wonder how they could afford a decent training facility.

Is it in the same league as Essendon, West Coast, Hawthorn (if completed) etc

It's quite impressive...

https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-10/brisbane-lions-new-facility-almost-complete-springfield/101050930

They haven't started on the second oval yet (the far one in the pic) basically have the main oval leveled out ready for turf, lights in and buildings would be 80% complete.

Springfield has a very similar feel as Casey as a suburb so it would be like us building mega facilities out there.

Just a heads up there Jim - we don't rely on the AFL for financial support anymore

2021 figures not released yet but in 2020 of the total variable distribution of $43M we got around $3M and Brisbane got $5M.

All clubs got the base distribution of around $10M. All save 4 or 5 got a decent top up by way of variable distribution. We got roughly the same as Carlton, North and the Bulldogs.

If we are at base distribution level for 2021 I'd be surprised and it would be a first for a very long time.

I would say for 2-3 years without a cent from the AFL.

Literally not true and also never true really.

"We did not need to borrow from the AFL and remained one of only six clubs to be “unassisted”, consistent with our goal of becoming a fully financially independent club"

I used to think the same but they sooked it up and started playing quite dirty when the game was over against us in last years final.  Zorko is particular has quickly become one of my least liked players in the league with his constant whinging to the umpires and other acts of poor sportsmanship.

Take your point, teams can change sometimes when they become more successful and there was an intent to hurt late in that game. I do agree to an extent on Zorko too he’s become a bit of a yapper. I do like a lot about the Lions though starting with their coach.

Daniher was mentioned before elsewhere, I get that but you can pretty much go through every club and find one player like that which you don’t like, even at Melbourne. You take a bit of the bad with the good. it’s when the weight of numbers get out of control that I decide to really dislike clubs.

The only VIC clubs I’d be ok to see win it are the Cats (unpopular I know) and maybe St Kilda and even then the idea that other Vic footy fans would get to be there for it is still too soon.

There’s a ‘pro-rata’ dispensation that we get that is more than the average bear. There is also special assistance. I believe we don’t receive the latter atm, but do receive the former and we get more than a number of clubs.

For that reason I'd prefer an interstate side to win.

I'll retract it for you too BBP as you'll be down there when we play them.

I know where you're coming from! I'm half an hour from Geelong and that's too close.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
