Joe Rogan and Spotify

Recommended Posts

As you've probably heard, Joe Rogan has been having some guests on his show lately that have been providing counter points to the mainstream information and advice being given regarding Covid-19 and vaccination. This has recently resulted in artists such as Neil Young and Joni Mitchell requesting their music to be pulled from Spotify and other artists are starting to follow suit.

I'm interested to hear from others on this. Who do you believe is in the wrong? Rogan? Spotify? Neil Young? Something else?

Quite often you will hear people come out and say Rogan has a huge platform to influence and is doing a disservice to people by promoting bad pseudo science but Rogan himself is claiming that he's just the guy asking questions.

Keen to hear what people think.

Apart from having ‘controversial’ guests recently, Rogan himself has apparently been speaking out against the govt imposed mandates since late 2020. He has made comments suggesting that young people don’t need to vaccinate, something that a person with his platform and with no background in science, should probably not be doing.

I’m sure that no small part of the reason that artists are bailing is that Spotify pay the artists using their platform, a pittance in royalties, while raking in big money off their backs. They then turn around and use the money they have earned from those artists and make a $100mil deal to secure Rogan on their platform. Regardless of what Rogan has to say, I think that would be enough reason to walk out on Spotify.

Well said Hardtack. It does a big issue with the low royalties for artists, especially during COVID when touring wasn't possible. Wouldn't want to have to lean on those.

When Rogan started his Podcast it worked well because he was 'Just the guy asking questions' and having a range of credible (and even not so credible) guests on to discuss different viewpoints. With his platform going to a new level this guise doesn't quite fit sometimes.

One thing is for sure, it is a big deal having Neil Young and Joni Mitchell walk but if artists like Taylor Swift, Madonna and Adele threaten to walk out as they've been called to do, then Spotify will listen..

To be up front I have never listened to Joe Rogan but I have never watched some of our draftees play either and it doesn't stop me having an opinion on them...

I dislike cancel culture and those trying to have somebody cancelled. I am more likely to listen to and take notice of Joe Rogan now because of Neil Young and Joni Mitchell's stance. Otherwise, he would not have been on my radar.

Except the stance of Young and Mitchell wasn't 'cancel culture'. They both took a stand for their beliefs and simply told Spotify they would not be affiliated with Rogan through the same service. Neither of them told Spotify they must cancel Rogan's podcast.

They both made it clear they would not continue with Spotify if they didn't cancel Joe Rogan.

No, they said they wouldn't be on the same platform as him. That's totally their decision, and they gave Spotify a choice of how to handle it. They didn't say 'you must cancel Joe Rogan's show'.

This wasn't 'cancel culture'.

You inspired me to check how much in royalties my band has made since we uploaded a few albums last year. I think I'm close to retiring on the USD$3.93 we've made. If you listened to one of our albums on 24/7 repeat for a year it'd only be about the same as having sold a CD.

I completely agree with their choice to do that and encourage it, if they feel strongly about it. People should be entitled to their own opinion.

What I don't agree with is a gang up culture of trying to de-platform someone for their opinion. Make no mistake they are trying to de-platform him.

The other part to this story is Joe Rogan's historic use of the N word which I completely condemn and would agree more with him being banned from Spotify for being racist. I also believe that everybody should be treated equally under the law and regardless of colour of skin the same words should be punishable under the same sentence.

Yeah, look I'm with you on 'cancel culture' as a concept. I think it only furthers division if you can't talk people around calmly with facts and understanding, rather than just screaming them down and trying to silence them, which only ends up reinforcing their 'victim mentality'.

In saying that, I think there's a big difference between being de-platformed and being silenced. Free speech isn't free from consequence, and publishing organizations are under no obligation to provide people doing damage with what they say an audience.

As for the 'N word' topic you've raised, that's another kettle of fish, and without going off track - there's clearly nuance in the context of treating it 'equally under the law regardless of colour'.

I don't think the colour of your skin should be a nuance.  It won't surprise you but I also don't agree with identify politics.

What if my skin is one colour but I identify as having another colour? Can you identify as a skin colour you are not born with or only gender?

In my opinion nobody should use offensive language regardless of the skin colour.

Of course it is. If you think Kendrick Lamar saying it is the same as Donald Trump saying it then I reckon you should do some reading about the 'reclaiming' of that particular word.

Appreciate the chat, but we'll likely start going way off topic now and end up going in circles so I'll just leave it with that.

Have a great weekend mate!

Agree to disagree except for the going around in circles which we would and I agree.

Have a good weekend as well. Go Dees 2022.

Even scarier is that ‘someone’ has been paying big money for artists to take their music down from Spotify due to the whole Rogan situation. No such thing as being able to have an opinion or freedom of speech anymore. Follow the sheep or get cancelled.

Where did you get that bit of info from? I just did a bit of googling and could find nothing that claims someone has been paying artists to remove their work from Spotify.

My take is that Rogan is about as useful to considered  community opinion as is a quasi anorexic footballers wife with chiselled jaw ,botox lips painted eyebrows and inflated self worth labelling herself a " social influencer".

For most of my life equality has made the most sense to me, but you're right in that it doesn't mean everyone's circumstances are the same.

Appreciate the comments in here, it's bound to be a subject that has people on different sides.

    CROSSROADS by The Oracle

Melbourne stands at the crossroads.  Sunday’s game against the West Coast Eagles who have not met the Demons at the MCG in more than ten years, is a make or break for the club’s finals aspirations.  That proposition is self-evident since every other team the club will be opposed to over the next eight weeks of footy is a prospective 2024 finalist. To add to this perspective is the fact that while the Demons are now in twelfth position on the AFL table, they are only a game and a half b

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well
