We won the centre clearances...they won stoppage clearances with the greater numbers around the ball.

The selections mean that both TMac and Lever have chosen to play both i/state games rather than stay with their young family and new bubs. 

Credit to them and partners for making those sacrifices.

Do you really think we lost last week because of May and Lever and the Dog's tall forwardline?

We lost last week because we couldn't convert in front of goal and they applied a lot of midfield pressure and shut down the Langdon wing, which caused us to overuse the ball.

The backline had nothing to do with it, and it doesn't matter how many talls GC or anyone else plays. May, Lever and Petty are and will continue to be the best defensive unit in the competition. It's what happens forward of the centre that has been our biggest problem this season and particularly in the last 6 weeks.

Absolutely and especially TMac who's newborn has been unwell for a few weeks.

I know that lots of families experience similar time away for work, so these guys aren't exactly alone, but it still is a big sacrifice and puts a lot of pressure on families. Thankfully we aren't in lockdown anymore so for these families getting the support they need becomes that little bit easier while their partners are away.

Fingers crossed we come back with 8 points, making the whole thing far more worthwhile! 

And PS- trust the AFL to screw us and nobody else when it comes  to our quarantine facilities in WA.

I didn't mention anything that it was specifically just the Doggies game.

Our defensive unit has dropped off in the past couple of weeks.

Correct but that is due to the midfield not the backline or teams stretching our defense.

Yes they did. 6 goals from stoppages. We were incredible vulnerable when the ball went to ground in defensive 50.

Melbourne are rated as the worst in the AFL for giving up scores from defensive 50 stoppages.

Again that is not a result of the talls. The ground level work and their mids kicking goals was what killed us. That is on the midfielders and the small defenders. Not on May or Lever or Petty.

The talls aren't the only players in defence.

I know. The point was being made that teams try to stretch us by bringing tall forwards. That is an unproven strategy. 
Every game we have lost this year can be put down to two things: poor defensive pressure / work rate from our mids and horrible inaccuracy in front of goal.

I reckon it's a pretty proven strategy given recent results.

It's not a slight on Lever, May and Petty, all are still playing well, but using extra tall forwards to bring the ball to ground makes us vulnerable because our small defenders are not great below their knees. No coincidence Hibberd is coming out this week and Goody moved Spargo to the backline last week.

The point is by bring talls in its to make Lever more accountable and May to lesser degree. Last week showed how vulnerable Lever is when matched one on one. Couple of times times he was simply out marked by Naughton in one on one contests. 

The other point is now clubs are putting enormous amount of work into Salem. The pressure they applied on him on the weekend was evident and he hasn't been able to give that run and drive like he did in the first half of the year. No coincidence that they've brought in an extra distributor in Bowey?

Our defence is still standing up and doing a great job. But clubs are starting to click onto this. We are leaking easy goals then compared to the first half of the year.

Did he? Every week Spargo, Pickett and Neal-Bullen (plus the wings) assist in the backline. Are you sure Spargo was actually moved into defence? If so, I didn't see it, although it is always hard to identify specific positions players are in when watching on TV.

Yep, may have moved him later in the game, but definitely spent most of his time in the first half in defence.

I assume the blue dots are disposals? And the red/orange/yelllow is time spent in that part of the ground? As a matter of interest, is this data for the whole game or part of it?

Hang on a second - we have the best ruck in the game (or so everyone tells me) - he can do his job and ruck for most of the game and then Jackson is most definitely susceptible to getting replaced by Weideman.

LJ is a jet but he may not be the best option to win in 2021 - regardless of how the FD and Goodwin are using him and Gawn.
