I saw his death notice in The Age today (2 July). He was President of the MFC for a couple of years in the late 1970s. Sacked Dennis Jones as coach and replaced him with Carl Ditterich.

Here is his Wikipedia entry.

Thanks Ldvc.

Carl was an interesting player. I wonder if he was the last of the captain coaches?

That is sad news.

Wayne and I became friendly when I sounded him out to run for MFC President,  which he obviously agreed to.

He then appointed me Team Manager of the senior side under big Carl.

We tried to set up an Australian version of IMG, the big USA Sports management Company, but were both busy with other work and we let it go.

Later I tried the same thing with Whispering Jack of DL and we managed several players, including Wayne “the Dominator” Johnston, the great Blues finals player.

But back to Wayne, he was a nice  and humble man and I wish his family and friends sincere condolences and RIP Wayne.

This post would make a good ‘ Who am I ‘ game.
Condolences to the Reid family.

Sorry, I was trying to put a bit of context to a guy that’s just died, who most of the young DL’s wouldn’t really know anything about.

Pity you didn’t see it that way.

RIP Wayne.

I’m sorry - I was referring to who you might be. Sounds like you have had a lot of involvement in the Club. No offence meant.

No worries, I am probably just irritable over a game we threw away at selection.

Malcolm Blight was the last captain coach. (I think.)

Thanks for sharing this. Too bad our club didn’t show respect by wearing black armbands.

Probably will the next game.

Technicality but the last captain coach was Jezza. Blighty was coach player he wasn’t captain is my recollection

RIP Wayne. And condolences to the Reid family.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
