Let Trac just focus on becoming the best footballer for our club without the extra weight of captaincy (I also think Max has suffered a little from this too, but apparently I’m in the minority on that).

Viney relished in the role of captain and took his game to his best level of footy, but unfortunately he is just way too injury prone. Give it to Lever in a year or 2 and let Max just worry about his body and footy in the latter stages of his career. The poor bugger gets nothing from the umps game after game.

Lever then daylight. Leadership is not necessarily about being the best player but about having the capacity to translate vision into reality via effective communication.

100% agree with this. Jakes a good player, but the key reason we traded hard for him was his leadership. He’s still young too at 24 years old. He’s our general on field, organizing the players and barking encouragement etc. He’s the best leader we’ve had the club since Neitz and I’d be staggered if he wasn’t our next captain.

Trac’s definitely maturing now and developing some leadership qualities, but Lever is a mile ahead of anyone on our list.

Lever for me also.

He’ll be a senior coach one day in the future.

Lever is a standout

As much as I love Jack Viney, I reckon his feet are too unreliable to give him back the captaincy. I think our current structure will carry us for anther 3-4 years fortunately. At that point, there could be several options which again is a fantastic problem to have.

Lever for me.  There was a point in the game against the pies where May got first hands to the ball but the pies player was paid the mark and went on to kick a goal (TERRIBLE CALL).  May was filthy.  I clearly lip read Lever say to May "it's just one mark".  Lever knew the decision was terrible but remained composed, focused and professional.  Captain material......

Also, after our win against the Dogs a couple of our players made mention of how he’s always yelling out instructions, encouragement etc. And this was evident in his post-match interview with Richo where he’d almost lost his voice.

I am clearly In Love with Max (see my avatar)

But thinking to the future is Trac our next leader of the Demon pack?

I know lever is prob up there but I am super impressed with what I’m reading and hearing about Trac atm…

Thoughts??

Trac or Oliver by a mile for me.

But in essence, it is about influence. To quote John Maxwell - "A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way". So, who would our players, club personnel and supporters naturally look to and follow

Using your own metric, I think Trac does this just as well as Lever if not more so.? AS good as Lever is, I think Trac also has it over him by the fact Mfc is his only club.

Clayton Oliver?

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Essendon

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 2 Jacob van Rooyen

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
