For those of us who are old enough to remember those games, I wonder how many of today's would be in that team?

That's the level of talent you need to GET to a grannie - and not enough to win one.

If only we could find a way to take today's defence and combine it with the 2000 forward line.

Poor old Steve Febey had the ignominy of playing in both those debacles.

The biggest tragedy of that 2000 side was that it was so young. With some good recruiting and development over the next 3-4 years to bolster the list, we should have genuinely been contending for premierships for years to come.

We won 10 games in 2001.   We also drafted Scott Thompson that season , but he buggered off to Adelaide soon after.  What could have been....

The AFL would ignore its own rules and give special permission for Matthew Febey to play one of the Febey roles. 

Who would win? Neither. It's the MFC after all and somehow both sides would find a way to lose.

In 1988 we won three tough finals in a row to get to the grannie and then we played the dorks at the peak of their zoning induced form (in the day it was joked that they could play their seconds and still be good in the days before salary caps, drafts and limits on squad numbers).

In 2000 we only had to beat beat a cocky blues (on the back of one of David Schwarz's greatest games, especially the last quarter) and then a weakened roos to go up against a team that had lost only one game for the year.

Both opponents were dominant in those 2 years and we stood no realistic chance. As to which team would win, any demon squad with Schwarz and Neitz would have to be respected but the 1988 team had too many out and out demon champions like Lyon, Wilson, Johnson, Viney, Stynes, Wight and Healy even though it was not enough for a flag.

I went to both grannies and I declare a diplomatic draw. Proud of all of them.

You know I never realised Cam Bruce missed that 2000 GF.
