Top-five most distance covered in a game in 2020
Ed Langdon, 13.3km v Sydney, round 15
Christian Salem, 13.3km v Gold Coast, round 6
Ed Langdon, 13.1km v GWS Giants, round 17
Christian Salem, 13km v Collingwood, round 12
Christian Salem, 13km v GWS Giants, round 17

Top-five most distance covered per game in 2020
Ed Langdon, 12.3km
Christian Salem, 11.9km
Adam Tomlinson, 11.5km
Clayton Oliver, 11.3km
Sam Weideman, 11.3km

There was another article like this last week which showed who our fastest was, and to my surprise it was Christian Salem. It's not immediately obvious, but he is clearly a far better athlete than many give him credit for.

The other stand out here is Sam Weideman. He has a lot of big detractors on this site, but it's obvious the bloke works extremely hard to provide an option and create contests. We get another genuine marking target up forward next year, and he could seriously break out in my view.

I have been very cold on the notion of Ben Brown (mostly because of his hair..), but if all we're getting him for is to lead hard at the ball, it opens up the ground for Weids, Fritsh etc to go to work.

Yes the surprises keep coming. Vandenburg the quickest and Weid in the top 5 for distance covered. There are so many performance indicators the club uses which are evidence why they rate players higher than we mere mortals on Demonland do. I marvel at Ed Langdon and the kms he covers, I was pleasantly surprised to see how quick and how much ground Salem covers. A few of Tomlinson's detractors may take a step back as well when you can see how hard he works. Well done gentlemen

I would love to see the rest of the list for MFC to see where the rest of our midfield are and their work rate.

Yes, was really surprised about Weid....now only if he could get the pill!

Maybe if they stopped making him run so much in game it might keep him fresher to clung a few more marks and kick a few more goals

Key forwards have to run a lot of KM's. They play high game minutes (up to 100%) and are often jogging to reposition forward of the ball. It's less intense running than the mids and smalls.

That said, Weid missed a reliable partner once Jackson got injured and the Swans and Freo games in particular were noticeable that he had to play CHF because either Brown wouldn't contest or Preuss couldn't get to the contest.

Weid was constantly towards the top of the most KMs and I think it caught up with him in the last month.

The one that really stood out for me was the lack of Polec in the North list as he was top 3 for them last year (see link below). His work rate clearly feel off a cliff this year. Good to see that Brown's didn't.

For us, Salem was up there last year as well. He is a good endurance runner and still for the life of me I dont know why we dont have him start on a wing.

Also Jesse again with the running! Come back to the G and you can run all day with Langdon.

I am fairly certain Ben Brown covers a lot more ground than the Weid too. He’s a 13-15km per game forward

And that's just his kicking for goal

Play Salem on the opposite wing to Langdon. They both cover ground well, both have decent speed, and we could try Salems kicking skills being the release kick inside 50 instead of chips around the back flank.

Well the article says he covered on average 200 m or ~1.5% more than Weid this year.

Slightly surprised at the sheer volume of movement from Weideman. At least we know total workrate isn't a problem. No doubt he still needs to find that last aggressive step more consistently but it is of intetest to note that he's ahead of Ben Brown on basically every stat in 2020.

Salem is starting to build a case as the consummate all-round professional. If you got six Christian Salems from the mid-first round of six drafts you'd be laughing.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
