Life in Australia - Melbourne 1966

Featured Replies

Found the answer to my own question:  it is the 1964 GF.  I was confused by the lack of streamers/paper on the ground in the colour version , but the Hassa Mann goal is at the 5.20 min mark in this clip:

Incidentally, I haven't seen this version previously, and was only posted in July 2019.  I think it is the longest version of the highlights, but misses the final siren after the Crompton goal.

It's definitely 1964 footy.

We played Collingwood twice. 2nd semi-final Demons134 def Pies 45. Attendance 93,010.

Grand Final Demons 64 def Pies 60. Attendance 102,471.

I'm leaning towards the semi although as a 13 year old at the time it's a hazy memory.

Some of the other footage may well pre-date 1964 or be a year or so later.

I assume you mean we played Collingwood twice in finals in 1964. In those days we also would have played two home and away games against Collingwood every year, with one at the MCG and the other at Victoria Park.

ummmm.....not really, the vfl season was 18 home and away rounds, for 12 teams. so, played each team once and 7 teams twice. very similar to now (excluding 2020)

Some of the footage predates 1966 definitely. Looking at the cars on the road the most "modern car"I noticed was the 1962 Falcon. I could not see one 1964 Holden which was an extremely popular model.

Queens Birthday games were of course also enormously popular and had crowds rivalling the grand final.

The chicken scene would have been the Myer food hall in the Lonsdale Street store

The street scenes look like 1965 because I spotted a couple of HD Holdens.

Didn't see anyone with your fashion and make up sense, Uncle. Lots of conservstive brown and grey. I wonder how you would've survived those times.

My mistake. I was sure the season was 22 home and away rounds, precisely to ensure that every side played each other twice.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
