I don't understand this point about passengers.

You don't get that defensive structure without everyone on board.

We had players that made mistakes with ball in hand and some of those might miss a game next week, but we shut down a very good running team with a stunning 18-man defence.

One example I would give is Brayshaw. Had a quiet night but he ran constantly from east to west to combat the Saints spread and switch. That's not a passenger in my view.

On a side note, another point I would make is that defensive efforts are not always reflected in tackles or any other stat. Sometimes corralling and forcing a kick to an advantageous position is better than a tackle.

Don't get me wrong, this performance was far from perfect and we have plenty of players that need to get better around the ball and with ball in hand, but you don't get a performance like that from May, for example, without everyone pulling their weight, defensively.

This is fair, and I agree.

But what we can aim for, and what we need, is consistency defensively as well as output offensively.

It's important for us to be able to win games off the back of defence, but where we can get better is to take this level of defence and then ensure that the players we've got in those mid/small forward roles are hurting our opponent the other way.

Brown definitely deserves another week. He also looks as quick as Usain Bolt compared to Tmac out there.

He finds space, too; he takes an opposition backman with him on the follow trail. Handy dummy leads who may well take a few shots consecutively - he space-finding is so good.

Totally agree, Titan.

I would love to see us trade in a good small forward to pair with Kozzie. He needs a partner in crime, so that he gets a little less attention and finds a bit more space.

That said, I don't think it'll be long before we see Kozzie kick 3 or 4 and really break out.

What impresses me is his willingness to gut run up and down the field. That usually takes a couple of years to instill.

Part of what makes me hesitant to drop/rest him is the fact that we're playing a couple of sides in the coming weeks who don't have great matchups for him. I see a chance for him get a bit of confidence.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
