Any idea why they’re not wearing proper training gear? Not important but just curious. They do all look homeless. It’s odd.

Assume you're not referring to the gear they rocked up to training wearing. I believe you are referring to the pictures I posted earlier with Melk, Salem, the Macs, Hibberd etc. These photos were from unofficial legal small group sessions on the 13th and 15th.

The latest photos I've posted from the MFC official instagram account show the guys training in their official gear at the first official session.

Those photos with no Melbourne gear was not from yesterday

Does anyone else wonder how hard 'Oli'  is working out, in the Gym.?

You don't have to be super buff to be an elite footballer. As long as he's keeping up his fitness and aerobic capacity, those are the things that he really needs to keep delivering to his talent.

No, that's not enough.

We want our players to be thorough Pro's.    Not near enough, good enough, Jaded.

For too long we around Melbourne have made excuses for our loved top players.   We let them off the expectations we place on other players.

This is not only inconsistent for the list,  but its a bad example on the younger players, coming through.   And can breed a laziness into the squad.

We can see the change so far, in Petracca.  Hopefully that will translate in a much better midfielder.

Its time for 'Oli',  to step it up, and also Brayshaw.

We need these boys to hit their straps,  before the likes of Gawn and tMc start to wind down with age.

Good to see you haven't changed one bit Dee-luded.

You must have missed the part where Oliver undertook a strict rigid training regime after his first year that resulted him losing 6 kilos which then translated into a stunning year of him winning a best and fairest at 19 years of age. Or when him and Sam Weideman decided to challange themselves in the off season by doing extra 100 laps of the pool in their days off.

This notion of 'Oli' needed to do extras is purely crap. Ask Brendan McCartney what he thinks of Oliver, and he will tell you he's the most hard working and competitive beast he has seen since Joel Selwood.

You make these ridiculous assumptions based pictures that you see on the internet.

Oliver body shape is just fine.

Edited by dazzledavey36

I've seen Jack Viney say he can't keep up with the way Oliver trains.

As a football club who hasn't won a premiership since 1964, we have lots of problems.

Oliver isn't one of them.

Oh, you must have assumed I'm suggesting he put on weight.?   Wrong.  Just doesn't appear to have been in the gym a lot,  but might be wrong of course.

And Brayshaw as well,  is carrying a body of boyish proportions.

The club has to set higher standards physically,  than they have ever done before.

These two boys should be leaders of the near future,  and should be looking to carry more weight of responsibility,  as near future leaders.

Its time for this group,  inc Petracca,  to finally step up.

No i did not assume that.

But the days of being in the gym and stacking on massive amounts of muscle are gone. Youre still stuck in the 90s mentality on players needing to have the bigger biceps then the next team. It does not work like that anymore.

Midfielders especially need to be at a lean level to be able to run out games. They're still able to maintain their strength, but running out games at a much longer level. Oliver and Brayshaw are very good at this.

And how do you know the club had not set highest standards physically Martin? Did the pre season doco not prove to you that pre season was probably the hardest they've ever worked in Burgo? Players have been on record this year so far saying that this pre season was by far the physically and mentally challenged they've ever done. Ed Langdon who came from the Ross Lyon program said it was his hardest by far.. not bad huh.

Again you making this assumption on the back of one merely photo and no facts or information.

Your assuming this.  This is Not what I'm getting at.    Bigger biceps is your thinking, not my idea.

Then what is the issue? Oliver is in great physical nick and has worked extremely hard off field at his training.

There are still things club needs to get right,  the boys off field training and gym is not one of them.

Edited by dazzledavey36

i don't care about their body shapes and wouldn't know what their ideal body weight or skin folds are anyway, but one thing I will say is both Oliver and Brayshaw need to work harder than what they did in R1. both guys were disappointing imo and let their opponents dominate them in the first half when the heat was on, and some of their defensive efforts were pretty bad. I see both guys jogging way too much for my liking when their opponents are sprinting forward and creating overlap run like its a training drill. Brayshaw has been in average form for 18 months now. he especially needs to lift and find some consistency to his efforts or he might find himself out of the side for someone like a Sparrow or AVB instead.

See, your assuming things.

This is the AFL Pro standard,  for midfielder physiques, for the endurance athletes.

Gym work is important to develop core strength, and lean physiques, so no extra weight is carried around the grounds, and leads to superior cardio vascular endurance.

I'm not a Nibbler basher for the most part although I am disappointed with his disposal output at times despite his excellent running ability.

I would however take a chubby huffing and puffing Clarry any day of the week over a lean Nibbler who can run all day.

I see a different picture.  I think Oliver has a fair way to go,  to get to a fully supreme AFL midfielder endurance physique.

I also think rayshaw has a lot of work to do in the Gym.

Its high time this club got into true professional standards.

Starting with the on-field players.

Watts gone, Hogan gone.  Maxy only has been a Pro for a few years now,  after lingering for most of his career.

Leave the amateur Melbourne behind,  and move into higher AFL standards,  Demons.

And what your saying is Oliver and Brayshaw don't do enough gym work because they don't have the AFL pro standard body?

You've said some ridiculous things over the time 'luded', but this is right up there.

And I do laugh how a a pro physic body is the standard to becoming a great AFL player in your case..

My preference is petite Fems.  not buxom weather girls.   Livinia,  is around my taste.

Dee-luded's been here in this latest guise for five minutes and already has close to a thousand posts of drivel.

Clearly loves the sound of his own voice, or whatever the internet equivalent is.

Just put him on 'ignore' and watch the quality of threads and your life improve immeasurably.  ?

I would take both of them, and much of nibblers best work goes unnoticed, in games.   Its often not noticed,  until watching replays,  where we can go back again and see what took place, on ball and off ball.

He does a lot of really good footy.

IF we are to EVER become premiers,  we have to let go of the notion,  'lucky they're with us'...  that's just not enough.

We have to push our best players,  just as Smithy did.   Just as Barassi did,  just as Jordan did.

Being a great recruit,  is nowhere near,  being a great player.

And we are all posting in other threads about....  why we have so few greats,  at the Mfc,  over the past 50+ years.

Am I wrong??  Demonland...      Or are we all wrong,  and contribute to a "near-enough" attitude,   as long as we love them.

When did this guy play again at the Pies.?   And your happy to have that culture,  of binge-ing amongst your group.?   Even tho Swan was a Star, how many did he distract from their careers and failed.?

No wonder he was a footy show regular.

Who did we have on the footy show in the past 10 years,  dd.?

Oh so now our players are 'binge-ing'.. again you're just making up things along the way and it's not healthy and incredibly harsh on the likes of Clayton Oliver who I'll take Brendan McCartney word over yours that he is one of the hardest working young players on our list over your "they're bingeing" or "Oli has a long way to go with his body shape blah blah blah".

You're looking for reason to pot these blokes. This has nothing to do with culture at all mate.

This is going around in circles 'Luded'. Time to end it at that.

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
