The more I think about this current climate the more I could picture a new league forming, one based on private ownership in a similar style to how premier league clubs are. I fear for the survival of us, the Saints, North, WB, and Brisbane, also both expansion clubs (who were already a money pit).

Should things get particularly dire it will be interesting to see where the AFL's loyalty lies, with expansion clubs who have been around for 5min or foundation clubs that have existed for a century.

Yep, no doubt about it for me, we are on the path to private ownership. Who knows what that could look like. I can’t see the membership/club model surviving this. Sponsorship deals are insignificant. I posted here the other day about how dire the situation was and that we are going to need a massive money source to continue. The problem is, this a global financial problem now, as much as it is a health issue, so finding an owner could prove difficult.

The Melbourne Red Bulls ... yikes

Wow, I think my brain just vomited a bit at that thought. Imagine all clubs being owned by international entities like Fenway Sports Group, or ownership under City Football Group who are 86% owned by Abu Dhabi Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

I was in Japan last year and went to their domestic rugby final. The Panasonic wild Knights vs The Suntory Sun Wolves. I would hate for our comp to head down that path.

I actually think the opposite might happen.

We are not a large economy and the game is unique to us, it couldn't sustain a private membership model.

It's more likely a rebuild of the game will only happen if it goes back to being a real community club/competition again.

Back in the time machine but taking the lessons of today could well be the answer.

It won't be back to the VFL days, but a stripped back version of the AFL.

A lot of volunteer work will need to be done to get things back on track.

Private ownership has failed in the past and with a greatly diminished economy would make no sense.

Say what you like about Chris Scott (and I always do), but that's great leadership. It would be great to see others follow suit.

Trying to find the accounts? Oops the system crashed and all records erased. Looking to see if there are any IOUs on the back of envelopes or napkins.

they just did a salary audit and found they've being underpaying for last 15 years............?

This is definitely curtains for GWS and Gold Coast.   They should never have come into the comp anyway.

Will be interesting to see how their players are divided to other clubs.    Standard of footy will increase big time.
