Will Ross be good replacement selection for Goodwin?

Ross Lyon stated that he asked Craig Kelly (then manager), before leaving the Saints, "Are Melbourne interested in me?".

Kelly basically said no one was, which was an alleged lie, as Freo had already spoken to Lyon directly.

Interesting that Ross would have jumped ship to Melbourne in 2011/12 had we the balls and brains.  Would have avoided the Neeld Fiasco.  Would have been cheaper than Roos, but basically a cardboard cut-out.

Just another example of how the club's process was absolute tish, and we got what we deserved basically.

Jimma and Gazza dayz.  I believe we have progressed.

I wouldn't want Ross, defence is very important I believe you have to attack at least at some stage to win the flag.

In 2019 we had neither a functioning offence or defence.

Little known fact that St.Kilda in 2009 averaged just south (1 point) of 100 points per game.

Ross Lyon will return to the game with further growth in relation to his EI and game plan refinements; and re-position himself the top 3-4 coaches in the game (with Bevo and Clarko and the guy that inherited Wallace's hard work).  Don't forget that Hardwick circa now, actually was inspired by Bevo's Bulldogs and their offensive quick handball game in 2016.

It would have been a Ross Fiasco instead. Even Clarko would have struggled with us given how poorly the club was run back then.

Don't argue with this idiot, he's not a Dees fan.

Fact is Garry Lyon approached Kelly over getting Ross Lyon and Kelly told him he was renogiating his contract with St Kilda.

Ross blind sided his agent, which in hindsight was understandable as Kelly was also Mark Harvey's agent

The troll has it all wrong again in so many ways

Yes I agree that the Saints should have won the 2009 flag.  I think if Geelong had won as they should have in 2008 then the Saints probably would have won in 2009 - justice would have been done and Ross would have a flag.  That's the most star-studded line-up not to win a flag since Geelong under Malcolm Blight in 1989-1995.  Malcolm went on to get his flags, Ross - not so much.

Pretty sure it was Lyons gameplan that Roos used at the Swans so .....
Roos would actually be a cardboard cut out of Ross Lyon.

Couldn't handle Lyon at Melbourne though.
It's one thing to be garbage but another to be batsheet boring garbage.

What he should do is coach one of the womens teams.
Those scorelines would suit him down to the ground.

I know someone who has dealt extensively with Roos and to some degree with Lyon, and knows people well who have dealt extensively with Lyon.

Roos is a decent bloke. I’ll leave it at that and you can fill in the blanks.

And I’d also argue Melbourne were pretty damn boring for the first couple of years under Roos. I’m not saying the list had the talent to be exciting or it was the wrong call, but I don’t think we would’ve seen much difference in excitement levels Roos vs. Lyon. The criticism most levelled against each as coaches was their crushing focus on defence.

Yes Richmond lost by 113 in R23, can we just ignore their other losses by 88, 70, 70, 68 and 46?

By contrast last year our biggest losses in this range were by 80, 53, 43, 41 and 40.

At 3 quarter time we were in front or within a goal of our opposition in 12 matches for only 5 wins.  It's well documented that our poor pre-season and injuries meant we weren't able to run out games.

Very generous and magnanimous assessment of our 2019 season.

No our 2019 was horrible but so was Richmond's 2016.

No arguements from me.
Roos steadied the ship no doubt but we were still boring to watch.
I also knew it would be so when we signed him as when he was at the swans and were on the TV I'd change the channel.
Same when Lyon coached the Aints.

As for us going forward I feel we need to be watchable to build a club fans and members can get excited by.
Which will bring in more members, more free to air TV time, more sponsors and importantly ...... More money.

Stats don't tell the whole story, but I seriously don't know how anyone could refer to 2018 as the aberration. There are absolutely no excuses this year - we have good reason to be optimistic.

According to those numbers if we bounce back to our trajectory of the past 5 years we are looking at approximately 18 wins this year... ???

Go Dees...

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.
