Don't need Lockhart or Jetta. Hibberd, Rivers and Salem can play back pocket. Lockhart and Jetta could not get a game at the end of the year. Smith is in front of them, probably Petty as well.

Don't know why Rosman would be in the team he's raw.

Too many back man on the bench no forwards on the bench.

Salem too good to be on the bench ahead of Lockhart any day of the week.

Doubt they will play 4 key defenders. Petty has been in good form but I think the 3rd key backman spot will go to Tomlinson.

Actually Jets played vs GWS (and Bombers I am Sure) but past his prime.

We need a specialist small defender andLocky is the man most suited. Not always do your best 22 make the best Team as you have to have horses for courses. For some reason Goody decided Locky was not in or team at the end and IMO has put Locky's career back about half a season. Should start again in BP or on the oppos best small.

I don't think Salo has that extra  pace to mind Tippy fir eg. Hibberd and Riv are more mediums and Mind the Fritsch size forwards. Rivers could mind a small but is suited to mediums and Hibbo can go tall at a pinch. Riv May even get midfield or forward time in due course such is his talent and ability.

About the Interchange Salem won't be on the bench very long. And he can play HB HF and wing (at a pinch ) Plus on the ball fir a quick stint.

Tommo is versatile CHB or key defender across HF to defend vs a good oppo defender like Haynes etc. also in ruck and on the wing.

Sparrow on the ball can play up forward and Jordon again on the ball down back.

Lastly Gus on the ball and floating up forward provides options.

So that bench is more in line with greater flexibility that Dogga Tommy Petty Rosman Tommo Salem  Fritsch ( please leave him forward) and a Trac and a couple of others that will give our team a completely new look and versatility that will surprise even our fans and the opposition of course.

All we have to do us get Goody to embrace these changes early i  the season and quite frankly the earlier the better for our Finals and team development.

Joel Smith.  He has shown he can lock down small forwards. Lockhart hasn't done that at AFL level, I am a fan of him as a player though.

Although Joel improved at the end of 2020 in the last 3/4 games and showed some aptitude to add to his athleticism and energy give me a natural instinctive footballer with skills and dare to break lines. Locky should have the Back pocket minding small opponents for a few years if he is given the opportunity by Goody.

Joel could hold down a back flank on a bigger opponent if need be If he continues to develop his game awareness. Is versatile which could be a huge advantage with our depth in the future.

joel smith finished the year playing pretty well on the mid-to-tall forwards - his game against gw$ when he pantsed jeremy cameron being a case in point

i think we were generally speaking going wih the geelong model of mid-tall defence - no 'small' per se

Well WWSW Whst I am saying is that too often we get beaten by the small forwards not having a small defender quick and smart enough to mind them.

In the same game Daniels kicked 3 goals snd nobody bear him so he was the most likely player to kick a goal/s and win the game.

I believe Lockhart is our Jetta replacement and Yes Smithy was much better at the end of 2020 as he seemed to alter his approach and Gain an appreciation of what an AFL footballer needs to do. His footy smarts seem to have improved also.credit to the coaches  for this and Joel.

Smith is depth and Reasonably versatile and  I look forward to his season But am very bullish about Locky's potential long term future at the Dees as a regular member of the improving team this year and many years ahead.

i don't overly rate smith or lockhart tbh @58er - both are classic 'good, ordinary' players, no different to the likes of o mac or godfrey or other battlers that we've had along the journey

WWSW you are falling for the trick many D/L ers do. They fail to give our players a chance to develop and improve.

Both Locky and Smithy have got plenty of room fir improvement and have potential as senior AFL players.

A season or even half should bring them along nicely as our defence has started to become quite reliable and now act as a team defence at long last.

Godfrey was middling and I presume  you are posting about Oscar, who was a trier but could not fill the key FB or CHB to the level required.

If Petty’s development and form is as hot as I think it sounds I would not be surprised to see Petty and Tomlinson take the main defensive posts with Lever as the third up and May to take the most dangerous small forwards inside 50 ie: Cameron, Walters, Tip, Ryan. He has the speed, smarts and agility for it as well as ability dominate in the air and/or offer further support against the big forwards. It also frees him to play a more attacking role in forward transition.

it's not a trick, @58er, it's an illusion; a trick is something whores do for money...

Image result for gob arrested development gif

they have both been on our list for three years and have obvious deficiencies that look likely to hold them back from being regular best 22 players

they've clearly got heaps of talent - you have to in order to be on an afl list - but both have been in / out of the side on a regular basis due to the missing elements in their ability

Many AFL players develop at different rates and Locky has only 2 years Smithy sadly injured fir a great proportion of his 3.
Maybe you believe we should not have even kept them in our list.

I believe my positive opinions about them will bear fruit this season as they will develop and eradicate their missing elements!

Most players are still works in progress and fulfilment of potential is not an exact science.

Jay and Joel deserve this season and I will be surprised if given an equal opportunity they don't succeed.

I'm sorry but I don't want Baker anywhere near the team. Apart from two flukey goals against GWS I've seen nothing that convinces me he can play anywhere near the level. His fitness is appalling and has no tricks.

I'm also worried about those selecting TMac on a wing. He has the turning circle of the Queen Mary and the reflexes of 55 year old fielding in slip.

Fritsch maybe an option for the second wing spot, but he is a natural forward and there are doubts over his two-way running.

Lol you are clueless.

I think that's what Goody would  want Is to have all available after a rehab Slightly below par style pre season.

I can see some real  problems unless all really step  up from now on and take part in most match drills and simulation matches plus the two official practice matches.

I would be happy if Viney ( or Angus but not both) Hibbo and Kossie were selected and  couple of newer Demons  like Sparrow or Jordan plus one of ( if form permits) Bowey Or Laurie and The well deserved ( so far) Rosman named on the wing after a good campaign since  Day1.

That  puts pressure on all players While fitness can be managed and team needs fior the now and future are clearly defined.

2018 is three years ago and clearly we will stagnate without change in our ranks if that seasons heroes are automatically retained in the best 22 when clearly about 4/5 have not improved or even maintained their form or vigour while in the ones.

Perhaps  since Choco ( Allegedly for a showtime simulation I assume )  burned the youngsters birth certificates he could tear up the medical ok's for all five Of this rehab group so a balanced team with form snd fitness are released to storm the G and conquer Freo on March 21st.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
