at least in the 70s when we got done like this each week we had the Hardimanns, Flowers, Alves, Wells, who performed despite the scoreboard - we've now only got Max

And the supporters could still remember the last flag.
Most haven't seen one now.

Thank you Norm.  May the MFC have some wisdom, forsight and bring some X factor both on and off the field in it's forthcoming off season.  Especially in a major way at the trade table.

My gosh... what a plodding bunch of plodders we have on the list right now!

SPEED CLASS FINISH & OVERHEAD MARKING ABILITY!!!

2020 on the positive it’s an Olympic Year and the Dees generally perform better!

Pros

Better draw

Top2/3 draft pick

Longer pre season

Hopefully less injuries

Some new assistant coaches

Get much fitter under Darren Burgess

Needs Fixing

Drafting of speed, talent & smalls. Recent efforts with KK, Baker for wings and Johnson, Bedford,  Spargo have not delivered, need to find a few that make it.

Langdon & Hill are on the right track, not surf here re the small forward.

Maybe one more tall marking forward.

Basic game plan stuff:

- Backline don’t all jump up to punch, someone stay down

- Someone mind goalsquare

- At throw ins, small guarding path to goal on the goal side

- Mids actually really run both ways

- Mids don’t all jump in after the ball, someone stay outside

- Mids recruit some outside speed

- Forwards really lead, and not just into pocket

- Take responsibility to take the shot!

- Find some crumbers

- Get ball in quickly, doesn’t mean don’t look (Dees always looked crap playing slow precise football)

In 2000 we had a few really good assistant coaches from memory, Ratten in the guts and I think it was Weston? backman  from bombers for the backline and our midfield work was slick and backline incredibly disciplined (like Tigers now!). Some appointments like that would be great.

And a match day tactician.

Gave me a little bit of hope. Among other things, he backs in Jones and Goodwin.

"As bad as the Demons have been this year, there are still positives in the way they've played. Rarely have they been blown away. Often their midfield dominance simply hasn't been converted.

Already there's been several off-field changes that should freshen things up, whether it be the departure of Brendan McCartney or strategy guru Craig Jennings.

This year's struggles should expose some of the shortcomings that might have been swept under the carpet last year. Sometimes the internal analysis and self-assessment that comes with a poor season can quickly turn what were negatives into positives."

It's not all doom and gloom: Demons can make finals in 2020

Boy did we prove him wrong last night.

Finishing last year in the top 8 came down to the last few rounds and there were games that were not too dissimilar to this year where we would not turn up.

Had we lost the last 2 and ended up 9th, then the drop to 17th considering the pre season is plausible.

So a bit of bad luck (injuries) and a few typical MFC missing quarters ... makes sense to me at least. The gameplan should have been adjusted, we are not a mature or consistent enough side to play the Richmond brand of footy. it's hard to back it up week in , week out.

If the 44 (minus those injured) dont turn up starping fit on day 1 of pre season for Burgesses month(s) of hell, then we will just be making up the numbers and a rebuild will be looming.

My 2 cents.

I put a lot of stock in the fortitude to keep going 100% and performing at a high level when getting thumped, particularly at the [censored] end of such a dismal season. The players you mention are right up there for me as the most respected dees to play the game.

I was really impressed by Lever's game on Friday. He never stopped trying, was positive, played super and worked hard right to the final siren. Respect. Has gone way up in my estimation.

About the the only positive to come out of the game to be honest (maybe Fritters continued good form the only other one?)

I would have thought it was vital to have at least  two right now we have one.

And i would say a mandatory acquisition would be a goal kicking coach. Like a serious appointment, we have lost games this year and the past because of it.

I don't doubt Carey's playing ability but has he ever shown that he can coach? I find his media commentary banal so wonder whether his knowledge of the game (ie his footy brain) is as well developed as some people think. And even if it is, I question his ability to impart that knowledge to the players of today.

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
