Terrible today.  His defensive work and pressure was way down.  He's a gun though and will bounce back.

Really ordinary game today, maybe a hangover from doing a power of running against Smith, Gunston, Henderson and Scully last week?

He's not a wingman, but he's too slow in transition running to play on ball with Oliver and Viney, and his poor disposal in the centre square hasn't helped either.

Wing is actually easier to position away from the contest on the defensive side than midfield running. Really he's been given the Dom Tyson's and tonight he played like Dom.

I'd rather see him at half back if he's not on the ball. At least  his dual sided kicking could be more useful at half back and it's more of a contested role.

Anyway, could be as simple as carrying a cold. Hope he lifts next week.

Everyone is entitled to an off day which are few and far between for Gus.  He'll be back.

Reviving this thread... Seems out of favour with playing in the guts, with even Jones preferred to him. Was really ineffective today... Poor game or something more?

I thought they were giving jones more time inside which pushed brayshaw out as he's the more versatile out of jones, viney and oliver. Melksham in the midfield has been a failure as his disposal drops worse than our other mids. Perhaps utilize melksham on tge wing instead of pushing brayshaw out.

He’s limited as the role he’s most effective in, by far, is as an inside mid

Unfortunately the same is true for Jones and Viney

At the moment their disposal and defensive accountability is far, far superior to Brayshaw’s, by comparison

They tried him at half-back after Lewis went down injured and he was, frankly, awful - only runs hard one way

Got a lot of developing to do to expand his ability as a high quality player

I've probably said it before (sorry, but I'm a senior) but one of his real weapons is his ability to kick with both feet. So he doesn't have to 'wheel around' on his preferred if the best/first option is to quickly kick with the non-preferred.

It amazes me how many players can't kick with both feet. Jack Viney would be so much better if he could kick with his right foot. Same with Dom Tyson.

Don't start me on Robbie Flower ...

And especially the players who are Not quick.

A few of our ball players not looked after tonight, like other teams seem to be able to manage...then again it is MFC..Razor did the right thing though. Those other maggots would have given a free against in that situation.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
