A Letter to Goodwin

Featured Replies

I don't agree with singling out a player with less than 30 games to his tally, least of all one who spent most of the last two years injured.

That said, whoever wrote this is right about the soft attitude at the club. Roos always painted the club as a separate entity to himself when he was under the pump a bit in 2015 - that was vaguely plausible given it wasn't his list, he was essentially a consultant brought in to turn a failing club around stat, Goodwin doesn't have that excuse, he's built this list and jettisoned those deemed surplus to requirements or just not good enough. He's moulded this team for two years still the same mental weakness manifests itself week after week, and it's not something he can foist off on the playing group. Challenge them to perform but take ownership himself

Imho the footy department should read this, and then take a collective leaf from the book of St Kilda. We have a better list, and proved this in Rd 1, but they have heart and back themselves to win whether it be against a bottom 4 team one week or the premiership favourites the next. The club has accepted mediocrity too long, if this team are going to be the real deal (with the potential to win multiple flags like Geelong 2007-2011 as some coaches have stated in interviews) then the excuses need to stop

Have a listen to all the old blokes waffling on about a soft underbelly and how we have been let down for decades. Clearly you guys have done nothing about it in all that time, so why whine about it now?

You old fellas should cut up your membership and write a letter instead of wasting words on here.

They have a more even spread of players. Their senior players are more settled in the side and overall they have put together more consistent performances.

Thankfully I won't sound like you in 20 years, mate. I'll make sure of it.

You are on the way you just don't realise it.

There is always a reason(ie excuse) as to why others clubs can do it but we can't.

We are always heading there, we just never arrive.

I liked the way you remove your leather gloves and gently placed them together before slapping him with them.

Don't worry boys, you've blazed a wonderful trail that most of us will be smart enough not to follow.  You'll be lauded for centuries.

What!!!!

Demonland isn't a closed group so everything on here is in the open forum. What's the difference between bagging a player on here or on social media????

Did you read my comments closely... there is a hell of a difference between bagging of a player on Demonland (which I personally don't agree with anyway) and doing it on social media (Facebook and Twitter)... the numbers of people viewing these comments via social media can be ridiculously high and they are far harder for a player (in this case JKH) to avoid. And then for the actual news/sporting news media to get hold of this and run with it, then the impact on the player is going to be far greater.  Sure JKH may not be performing to a level that many here and elsewhere don't consider to be acceptable, but do you really think such a broad public humiliation is acceptable, particularly when he is most likely trying his hardest and considering that he does not choose himself when it comes to playing in matches?

Without our decades of support you would have no club to follow in 2017

Ox is an idiot for sharing this.

It is fine to question and scrutinize decisions. But why be so outlandish and hand such rubbish onto media jock. It attracts nothing but bad publicity and yet again can be used to humiliate the club.

If one wants to question Goodwin's decisions why not email him directly? I have in the past, along with other members of the MFC, and they reply.

The guy hasn't stated anything untrue, so I fail to see how they have contributed to the clubs humilation.

Whilst they have highlighted it and caused the AFL media machine to analysis Melbourne decisions:performance (above the other 17 clubs) the only people who have humiliated the club are those that make the decisions/play for it.

Sometimes the truth hurts... and although I doubt this will cause any change maybe it might start the conversation

We're not in the days anymore where James Sellar could make it into the leadership group. Our leadership group is hardened, includes premiership winners and fighters but still can't galvanise when the chips are down like Sunday. We've already proven that we can be hard this year but the team picks and chooses when it goes

I wasn't there in the 70's but I respect those that were.

I can understand Old Dees disillusionment and all the gung ho stuff is crapola.

This pus-eating pile of dog turrds can take his letter, and his cut up membership, and shove them forcefully inside his anal cavity. He was never a supporter.  What a waste of space.  Have your say - somewhere like this - but we are playing better than we have in a decade - we are more aggressive and exciting than ever - and he throws in the towel over a loss by 3 points?  Sheesh.

A letter to the coach?  I'm sure Goody is immediately changing strategy and worried.  Thank god they sent the letter, the coach had no idea what to do before this.

WHen we win a flag - maybe not this year, but in the next few - it will mean SO MUCH after what I have been through.  This Farkwad should barrack for Whorethorn.  Soft as, and fair weather.

Being a true supporter is not easy, but it is valuable.

So it's okay to make comments as long as no one finds out???

The head in the sand mentality on here reminds me of the old 'dont ask, don't tell' policy...

everything is fine as long as it's not public, then we have a problem

So you do consider it acceptable to publicly humiliate a player... ok, your choice.

And you may have noticed I stated that I do not accept derogatory comments about players on here either... so NOT head in the sand mentality from my position.

Last week's loss (with due credos to Hawthorn for turning up), was possibly more the fault of the players for not making the effort.

(I wrote earlier that Goodwin's pressers are a bit lacking after losses, but I take it back. If he said what he thought about the game, it would probably be too advanced for most of us anyway, I assume modern public relations in clubs limits what a coach could say to the public anyway.)

I agree that his disappointment with the player's post-match regarding their intent and effort is as frustrating for him, as it is for us as supporters. Maybe we should be writing letters to players to ask them if they actually want to play? I couldn't be an AFL footballer no matter how bad I wanted it, but they weren't on. It may not have mattered what the selection committee chose to do last Sunday. Not many picked to play offered much more than poor JFK.

I hope after all of this toss, he's not home in tears thinking of necking himself. Poor kid!

Cut him a break.

While I don't agree with the contents of the letter, I'm actually happy about it.

For too long a Melbourne loss was a shrug of the shoulders, an oh well they tried. It's about time more was demanded from this club and unacceptable performances are put under the microscope.

While I dont agree with the content or the delivery.. good on him/her, we are as soft as butter. We should be letting the club know how we feel.

I dont rember the year when the entire Inter Milan members stand stood with their backs to the game for the whole first half. Now thats showing your discontent

I really don't think he was humiliated but his performance was questioned and in particular goodwins decisions were questioned.

Whilst not mainstream, I work in an environment where you can be told your performance is sh^t and not look to blame someone else. Most look at their performance and know they can improve it or if not find out what they are doing wrong.

We could easily be 6-1 or 5-2 but alas we are 3-4..... is it really that bad though? Like others have said, this is nothing like the Neeld era....

So far BM the position we are at is down on 2016. Mr Roos got us to ten wins I have yet to see anything that suggests Goodwin will pass that mark. Early days I know but the progress seems to have ground to a halt.

old dee that's true, but we could have been 6-1 with a touch of luck and no injuries to Gawn and Spencer.Silly play by Lewis and Jesse didn't help our cause either. Surely you would have to agree that our best this year is superior to our best of last year? We were in a winning position in all 7 games. How long since we have done that?  BTW I may be wrong but I think I could call myself older dee on this forum young feller.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
