Wasn't sure where to put this, but here's Brett Anderson's SEN Mock Draft:

https://www.sen.com.au/news/2017/11/20/brett-andersons-2017-afl-mock-draft/

Interesting he has us taking Oscar Baker. I'm expecting some left field picks from Taylor as has been the case in the past.

Oskar played for Wilston Grange (my local team) up here in Qld before being poached by NEAFL team Aspley early in the 2017 season. Has pace to burn and kicked the NEAFL goal of the year from memory running/dodging his way from half-back before slotting it from 50 on the run. He will take some time and doesn't win a heap of the footy but his outside run and pace means he can have a real impact on games regardless. A mate from WG says a few other AFL clubs are interested as well. Was a Lions Academy member but was cut two years ago which seems to have spurred him on.

Do we have a Rookie pic? I thought that it was only four pics in the main draft.?

you are correct CBD, no rookie spots left. We have 4 vacancies which will be filled come draft day (picks 29,31,36 & 47)

A couple of phantom drafts now have Hayes sliding (as is often the case with the highest ranked ruck) and falling to us. I'd take him if available. That potential to play as a key position forward and relieve in the ruck would certainly fill a need. And I feel we're a ruckman short on our list anyway. And the links to Baker seem to be continuing. Wonder where the noise is coming from.

Just butting in here - I would, but only because of the forward option. If he was a pure ruck, I'd pass (also on Coleman-Jones).

I could see us taking a Ballard or Brander if either happened to slide (unlikely) but no other KPPs.

The rest will be players who are either mids or capable of running through the middle. If they don't love a contest, they wont get picked, no matter how much run they might provide. I think they'll look for a small forward (which i include in the capable of running through the middle brigade). I doubt we'd pick up more than one player under 180cms. I could see us getting Spargo if medically cleared and I'm definitely expecting at least one from the clouds.

Some of the players predicted to go in the 30's around our picks I don't think we'd take - eg Houlahan.

Also wanting to put it on record how wrong I expect to be, as Taylor has so far surprised with each draft and isn't afraid of high risk, high reward picks. I'll take a stab at the four picks shortly just to prove it.

It's not particularly creative, but I'm just gonna leave 'Obak' here as a digital record of my potentially being the first in the door. Though his wild red mane is somewhat reminiscent of a certain Stars Wars character, so I'll add 'Obacca' just to cover the more creative neological bases.

I think so, but I'm getting sucked in by the potential.

I don't have a great idea of the other prospects available, but I think he fits our list profile to fill the longterm ruck prospect position.

I'd expect his development to track similarly to Gawn's (4-5 years before being properly AFL ready). However it's a bit high for a ruck selection and I like King from what I've seen so far, and don't know what else will be left on the board at that stage.

Seems like a real mixed bag outside the top 10 with a lot of different perceptions. It feels like "Taylor Time" to me.

Would you take him?

In that case, you can start spewing now RTG because I've thought long and hard to come up with my first 2017 Phantom Draft.

1. Charlie Spargo (Murray Bushrangers) GWS Academy
2. Darcy Fogarty (Glenelg SA)
3. Jarrod Brander (Bendigo Pioneers) GWS Academy
4. Jaidyn Stephenson (Eastern Ranges)
5. Connor Ballenden (Brisbane Lions) Brisbane Lions Academy
6. Sam Hayes (Eastern Ranges)
7. Hunter Clark (Dandenong Stingrays)
8. James Worpel (Geelong Falcons)
9. Jack Higgins (Oakleigh Chargers)
10. Jack Powell (Canberra) GWS Academy

That makes three early picks available to GWS through the academy system assuming their zone isn't changed to exclude the Riverina District which isn't really being "developed" by the Giants anyway (and note where my picks 1 & 3 are playing).

Here is an article about the GWS Academy that might be of interest.

In all modesty, I nailed the first choice for Jason Taylor and Demonland almost 12 months ago.

Yes, it's true that my overall tipping wasn't great but that's a reflection of how things can change in 12 months at this age level in light of injuries, loss of form and other players coming over the top. My point is that Spargo is one of those players who slipped off the radar to a great extent during 2017 but my mail on him has always been that he's potentially a much better player than a mid second round selection in the draft might suggest.

Now, I'm off to do my 2018 version.

Good on you for following the under age footy and providing an insight.

What this illustrates is how meaningless talk of "2018 super draft" is.  No-one really knows.  It's only now that there's some real insight into the quality of the 2015 Draft - Schache, Oliver, Francis etc ...

Seen him play a few times. He's a Fish Creek native. Now the Alberton Football League isn't exactly the cream of the crop, but they hit hard and are true country footy players'. He's a tough kid and isn't afraid to put his body over the ball, played in the seniors as a 16 year old. Not fast no, but he seems to have lots of time when he's got the ball.

I'd be happy to draft him if he is still there at pick 47, we'd get quite a few new members signing up too, as the McGannon family is a big one and the whole town of Fishy would get behind him.

Off topic a bit but I’ve never been to Fish Creek. It seems to me to be the quintessential name for a charming but sleepy Aussie country town.

Does it live up to that image?

And Foster down the hill.  Nearly always lush & green, & people always wearing smiles.

Not just that... check out these gun top 30 selections from the 2001 "super" draft:

4 - Graham Polak
5 - Xavier Clarke
6 - Ashley Sampi
7 - David Hale
9 - Luke Molan
10 - Sam Power
11 - Richard Cole
14 - Ashley Watson
15 - Barry Brooks
16 - Rick Ladson
18 - Shane Harvey
20 - Daniel Elstone
22 - Mark Seaby
23 - Charlie Gardiner
25 - Steven Armstrong
26 - Aaron Rogers
27 - Tom Davidson
28 - Mark Powell
30 - Rod Crowe

Point in case, those pulling their hair out about trading out of the 1st round of next year's draft, should really take a step back.
We acquired a set-in-stone star intercept defender, our greatest deficiency at the time.
And if you look at 2001, picks 1,2,3,8,13,24,36,37,40,58 resulted in stars, having 1st rounders was not a requirement to get one.

In fact a real bunch rookies coming on out of nowhere really helped the reputation of this draft, with Carazzo (5), Jamar (6), Quinten Lynch (19), Matthew Boyd (23), Nathan Bock (25), Sandilands (33), Ben Rutten (40) and Marty Mattner (51) all taken as rookies, who went on to long careers.

Recruiting is more of a refined science these days, but you still get the odd Jonathon O'Rourke, Jimmy Toumpas, Blaine Boekhorst, Nathan Freeman or Ben Lennon.

BTW Nathan Murphy is in the same style as Jack Watts.  Talented at all sports.  Tall forward but not key position. Could play high half forward.  Not the most aggressive type. Private school pedigree. Would need a year at Casey.

Worthy of our pick around 25-35.

James Worpel is a huge talent and super inside ball winning type like Oliver. Would be ready physically to play round 1 2018. Hard ball contested player. No frills. Can turnover footy by foot and not fast.

Either would be welcome but come with compromises. But which players don’t!!!

Yes I called Worpel out as an AFL ready midfielder.  Unbelievable bargain for the fuc&$)!n Hawks.

Sorry had to bump this. I thought this kid BALTA was going to be good. I am happy to talk to JT anytime

The other news is that the club has a new train on player in 185cm Dandenong Stingrays midfielder Noah Hibbins-Hargreaves (love the hyphenated name which is just so fitti
