AFL Player Ratings for the average pundit are over-rated, but the coaches apparently follow them closely, so when I saw a tweet regarding the ratings this year, I wanted to know how our boys are going. 

Based on 2016 and minimum 14 games played, there were a few Dees in the top few. 

Ruck
1. Gawn - no surprises here. 

General Forward 
8. Petracca - sandwiched between Bruest and Harvey. He is also the 21st best player in the AFL in the last 4 weeks (player ratings). Very interesting....

Key Forward 
8. Watts - between Walker and Cameron. Not a bad place to be! 

Key Defender 
1. T McDonald - maybe he might have a smokey AA? 

Last 4 Weeks AFL Averages: 
Gawn is raked 4th; Petracca 21st; and Vanders 40th (what?????????)

2016 AFL Averages
3. Gawn (after Danger and JPK, wont overtake Danger, but could be 2nd by the end of the year) 
30. Viney 
31. T. McDonald 

We knew that Gawn, Viney were our 1 and 2 this year, but I am surprised how high T Mac is on the list. Maybe we might get a couple of AA this year.

The AFL player ratings are stupid. Its like they asked one of the staff writers children to come up with a system of ranking the best players. But sadly it was the actual afl.com employees who created it.

Max Gawn and Tom McDonald

McDonald showed why his signature for a new contract was so highly sought after at Melbourne with his ability to not only beat his man, but also to rebound the ball out of defence.

Not player ratings but Frost and Omac both finished 6 & 7th in champion data ranking for goals conceded by defenders.

Frost 16 games, 16 goals (1.00 ave)

OMac 15 games, 15 goals. (1.00 ave)

Doesn't take into account quality of opposition, opportunity, handovers etc.

Above them were, H.Taylor (0.68), Weitering (0.95), Schofield (0.95), Henderson (1.00) Haynes (1.00)

Interesting Rance conceded 41 goals for the year.

Considering the blokes he plays on and at the standard of midfield protection in front of him, that's pretty good. Not to mention it was probably 34 after 21 games...

...but he was playing against 6 opponents & that was on a good day.

    After a very wasteful first half of footy the Demons ended up cruising to a clinical victory over the Saints by 38 points at the MCG and ultimately reclaimed a coveted spot in the Top 4.
