we had an enforcer in those days, name was (political correctness requires deletion)...

when the top teams decide to take out the dees' match winners, who is our enforcer in 2016?

I know the rules have changed, but the game has not as far as I can see...

just asking...

Can we send a Terminator back in time to take most of this team out?

Not to bag Roos-Goodwin and to note they came up with some great moves today....

But does anyone think our 2nd and 3rd quarter malaise was contributed to by putting BOTH Hogan and Watts behind the ball for the last 3 or so minutes of the first quarter when it was 5 goals to 1 since about the first 10 minutes and we had all the play?

1 man back I can live with. But seems silly to me. We ended up defending and not moving the ball for a few minutes instead of maybe getting another goal.

Also we still need to work on our last minute game close out.

Gawn hit it forward did he not? GWS had 3 coming through the middle opposed to Kent who peeled off from a flanking spot, no on was at half forward coming through with them. It just wasn't quite right.

I'd have 3 extra behind the ball but you got to have one at CHF coming through with the runners. And have to do all that you can to kill the centre bounce and/or get a clearance out to a wing and get a kick backwards for a mark or fight for a throw in. Anyway, we did enough.

No one was out marking Hogan down in the backline under that high ball. Strong punch. Game over

Tom Gillies was one of the worst footballers we have had I think.

It was an improved effort on the St Kilda debacle from last year (not hard though) but we still need to work on those situations. Needed someone forward of the ball to bump/block GWS's runners and/or create a contest if the ball went that way.

Should have been 10 goals down at 3/4 time.

loved the win and hate to be picky...but Gawns tap at the last centre bounce was Stkilda all over again. I was amazed we didn't get that right. All Melb players behind him and he taps forward? Anyway...post match review will at least be a good place to be this week, Bank the win and great fro morale but I think you gotta say we've got a lot of room for improvement also.

We fuggin won!!!

I just got home, still have no voice from booing Scully and the umpires.I enjoyed celebrating the win but now that I've settled down it feels like a pyrrhic victory but I'll take it.

don't talk 5hite

A Pyrrhic victory is a victory that inflicts such a devastating toll on the victor that it is tantamount to defeat. Someone who wins a Pyrrhic victory has been victorious in some way. However, the heavy toll negates any sense of achievement or profit. Another term for this would be "hollow victory".

Did anyone notice Daisy Pearce's kicking during Robbo's specky competition at quarter time? She could teach the boys a thing or two.

We did look out on our feet at the end of the third, but then in the last, GWS looked out on their feet. I'm just not convinced our work rate was good enough during quarters 2 and 3.

... the ball went to Shiel,  who balked then fed it out to running gws player,  who drove the ball deep from the run....  Hogan Watts & Pederson were all down in deep defence at the time,  waiting for the ball,  with hogan guarding the hole in front of the gws tall forward.

Nice to win Round 1 against a fancied opponent with 3 top 3 mids / forwards to come into the team over the next month.

It is one thing being a good kick, it is another thing being a good kick under pressure in the AFL.

Should note for those not at the ground that it was swirly as always but the breeze favoured the city end by a couple of goals IMO.

Made our first quarter look better. Explained to some extent why we had a lot of play in the 2nd but couldn't convert with a packed forward line - we had to open the game up more whilst not being burnt on the over lap.

Similarly the 3rd quarter was partially about holding on and staying in the game given we couldn't get the same run on as the first.

Once we get up and running in the last I did feel a bit of wind at our backs physically as well as metaphorically.

Conditions don't excuse a poor middle half of the game, but might explain some of why the game looked as it did.

You know who the chief butchers were today for us?

Watts and Viney.  5 Clangers each.

10 hours ago, Undeeterred said:

I find that extremely hard to believe.

And yet, amazingly, the facts don't change. Vandenburg, Garlett, Vince, Hogan and Bugg were joint second with 4 each.

Anyway, it's a moot point. Viney had so many clangers because he had the ball in his teeth while picking up and knocking together two GWS players with his arms. Makes the ball drop a tad difficult.

Watts had a goal, two official goal assists and at one point it flashed on screen during the game that he had some crazy number of score involvements. He took risks in dangerous places and came out well ahead.

If you want some really impressive clanger numbers, Heath Shaw the All-Australian rebounding defender had 8, on his way to 50% disposal efficiency. Somebody did a quietly superb job today.

Hehe. On reflecting on Kennedy's game I randomly remembered Howe and the best zero possession half Roosy had ever seen.

Lots of water to go under the bridge yet, but so far so good on that trade. Thought Kennedy was instrumental in the last quarter resurgence.

and a best and fairest  finish that was vastly higher than anybody who watched the season would have thought

Roosy wasn't born yesterday

Hilarious reading the gameday thread. There was so much moaning, grizzling and doom & glooming that it barely registered that Melbourne hit the front.

really? I missed it. I was at the ground screaming my lungs out like a real supporter

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
