Caravan Club / Memo

I don't like to plug...but there are two music venues in Melbourne both run by the same bloke called the Caravan music Club and Memo music hall.

The venues are aimed at an older demographic and they do have some stock standard fare of older bands who are still doing the traps ( Chain, Black Sorrows, The models, Ross Wilson, Phil Manning, Steve Cummings etc) but they also give time to less known local acts (Suzannah Espie, Jeff Lang etc ) and quirky overseas acts ( Steve Poltz, Pokey Lafarge etc ).

What I really like is they also put on some quirky shows and tributes - In May the Brewster Bros are doing an Angels tribute which is not just music - they will telling stories about the life and times of the Angels interspersed with music. They do birthday tributes to the likes of Dylan and Neil Young where they have amongst others Chris Wilson, Tim Rogers and Tex Perkins sing their favorite songs of those artists.

The sound in these venues is usually exceptional as they are not trying to blow you out of the room.

this sounds fantastic... I've been up in the old RSL upstairs around 2004 for a drink & socialising.

I'd love to see those old bands you mentioned. Chain, Ross Wilson, Joe Camileri, etc,  what about JoJoZep are those musos still about?  camilari wild, & that bald guy?

are the joJozep lineup still alive?  I saw therm once,  I think at south side six. I know joe & wilbur still about. the others???? loved the brassy sound.

The original line-up is still around to the best of my knowledge... John Power is living up here in country NSW (just had a recent heart bypass operation) and the rest still in Melbourne.  I used to go and see them regularly at the Kingston Hotel in West Richmond (I think it was) as well as other venues like The Tiger Room in Richmond, The London Tavern in South Caulfield and Bananas Nightclub in the Esplanade.  I also saw them about 3 years ago supporting Elvis Costello at a Day on the Green show in the Hunter Valley (most of the originals were playing including Wilbur.

As for the Memo, my one and only visit (to date) was for the Sports reunion show in the wonderful company of The Nutbeans :-)  A great day/night out.

Elvis Costello, Sunnyboys, Jo Jo Zep & The Falcons, Tex Perkins & The Dark Horses, Stephen Cummings

Saw this gig at Rochford  - Feb 2013  - last time they were together.

Sunnyboys were fabulous - it was great to see Jeremy Oxley playing and in good health

Jo Jo zep were great as was Tex .

Stephen Cummings who I am a huge fan of , has up days and down days - this wasn't one of his shininhg moments.

Elvis Costello was as always....just Elvis Costello !

Hi Hardtack,,, I just went searching for the falcons, (I'd forgotten the name) JoJozep & the Falcons, just started playing honey dripper on youtube... thats one of the songs I had been inspired by with the falcons, heard it on radio at the time then lucked it in at south side to see them live,,,

I loved that sound & rhythm,  especially the rhythm.  I've only just realised listening now,  that sound & funky rhythm has got Ross Wilson written all over it.

let me get back to listening to it... haha.

Actually, I don't think Ross Wilson had anything to do with the Falcons, but I do understand what you mean.  At the time the Falcons were playing, Wilson had Mondo Rock starting up.  Joe Camilleri had actually been around for a long time (almost as long as Wilson) and I think the first time I ever saw him was when he played with a band called Lip and the Double Decker Brothers (occasionally also going by the names Lip Arthur, or Lip and the Double Soul Brothers).  They usually played at the old TF Much Ballroom and the Much More Ballroom in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy in the early 70's (up until about 1972) and did the occasional stripped down appearance at La Mama Theatre in Carlton.

I was at the Kingston Hotel when the Falcons made the first set of recordings for the Live, Loud and Clear album (I think the final tracks used on the EP were done at Martinis) that had some great tunes on it... Girl Across the Street, Honey Dripper, Young Girl, Aint Got No Money and Riding in the Moonlight.  I consider this to still be one of the best recordings to have been made in Australia.  It captured the Falcons at their absolute gritty rocking best before they started getting a little too smooth.

Jonny Topper,  I've just found was the bald guy on sax together with JJ Camilleri, & unbeknown to me at that time I was also seeing Wilbur as well .. that was a daunting image with the lighting etc at the time.

it was out of this world to me,,, my world at that time.  absolutely loved tha sound... disappointed they stopped but soon after the black sorrows appeared a year or so later i guess... didn't know the connection of them then,  saw JoJo & Sorrows a number of times,  before the Sorrows were household name,  somewhere around Caulfield/Malvern?  can't find the pub now.  it was upstairs I think???  on the south side of the road.

anyway, I gotta go.

Was fortunate enough to go to this as well and it was a brilliant day. My daughter who was 17 at the time came along & was blown away by both Elvis & the Falcons. To the extent that when I went to see the Black Sorrows at the Caravan Club she asked if she could come too. Which she also loved (aided by the fact that they snuck a few Falcons songs into their set)

Agree on Steve Cummings - he had a shocker. It put me off going to see the Sports reunion shows. One of my favourite musical memories is a Sports gig at Martini's and I decided to leave my recollections unsullied

I'm pretty sure you'll like it a lot... very Stones like in its musical format.  Great rock with some nice real RnB (as opposed to what passes as supposed RnB these days).

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
