I was at the club's trade and draft evening with Jason Taylor and Todd Viney and while there was a great deal of discussion concerning a variety of the matters relating to the club, I don't think anyone went away any the wiser about who the club is drafting at #3.

We were shown highlight tapes of six players who the club presumably considers would be available within its range of picks #3 and #7. They are:

Charlie Curnow,

Aaron Francis,

Wayne Milera,

Clayton Oliver,

Darcy Parish and

Sam Weideman.

I would suggest then that we will draft two of those players next Tuesday night and while the club has made up its mind as to who will be taken at 3, nobody is telling. Not are they telling the player involved because they want the player to enjoy the occasion.

So, the suspense continues although watching the highlights passage and combined with the more detailed games I've seen in the past, confirms in my mind that Darcy Parish is our best pick. My next two would be Aaron Francis and Charlie Curnow ahead of Clayton Oliver and Wayne Milera. I don't believe Sam Weideman is for us.

Anyway, we'll know soon enough.

Great work. I like it. Maybe just because you have us picking Parish, i like it nonetheless. I don't mind Francis as a high marking half back with good footskills who is a strong, fast risk taker who can play anywhere. Most of the good teams have one. Unless there is a better available key forward at 7 I would like us to take him although it seems like we have barley spoken to Francis. If he slips past us, we have to get Curnow or Weideman instead

Just watched the footage of Darcy at home on the farm and it seems clear to me that the perfect role model would be Bernie. I was unsure on this kid because of his size, but country kids are hard, honest workers and tough as nails.

Francis doesn't have an issue with the physicality of the sport. In fact, one of his strengths is his competitiveness and aggression.

The complete opposite of Watts.

Not only that. Jack Watts was a key forward for the entirety of his under 18's year whereas Francis has been used as a utility for much of this year.

Neither are the foil for Jesse.

But the Weid certainly could be.

Depending on who is there and who isn't, i'm warming to the idea of Aaron Francis at 7 if he available. We could use a type like him. If Weideman or Curnow are available at 7 then take them, if not then I like Francis and he would be best available

Physicality is beside the point I was trying to make. Also wasn't alluding to Jack in U18's.

A Francis wants to be that Goddard type. Swings between the arcs, can play that third tall defender who takes marks and sets up play or go forward and take a grab by exploiting a mismatch as the third tall. I can remember us all talking about Jack in exactly the same way.

Anyway, like we both said, not the foil for Jesse. Therefore I would pass.

Agreed, we're in a fortunate position.

We get to pick what is effectively the first "live" selection given that Weitering/Schache are are foregone conclusion and then have some interesting choices for our second pick. Whichever way it goes, we get two of the best 10 young players in the country as at draft selection night.

Yes, they showed 6 players on the night? There's 15 possible combinations of 2 players from 6.choices (30 ways they can be picked taking order into account). Exciting times!

And that group of 6 seems to conform just a little too perfectly with a lot of the medias phantom drafts. If the MFC were holding on to an outside the box choice I don't think they'd let it leak to a supporter group.

I did think both Weed and CC would slide a bit from their lofty elevations...That was before this too.

A lot of what will go to selections are how the lads interviewed and such. Be difficult for may scribes if any to be privy to that and at this end of things might just nudge one player forward and others along as it were. We only see from the outside and clubs are deciding with 'inside' knowledge.

Whilst I think you do need to bank and build for rainy days Melbourne has no such luxury. If we are to maintain momentum and retain the interest of the list it has to get moving and very quickly. Players who will take that time to develop arent adding to the cake a great deal in the near future.

Who ever comes will need to be dead keep on pushing for games next year. That doesnt mean to say they will get them , but they might, nor do we NEED them there , but it helps.

Just as Gus said Im here let me at it...and made selecting him irresistible I think Parish could do similar... The effect of more ability in the guts will be a tonic for this team.
