Jared Rivers' career could be over

Unfortunately Tony, because of the weak nature of our list, Rivers was regularly asked to mind a gorilla forward. That was never his strength. Chip and Judy were still relatively young. TMac not yet even out of nappies. I remember Riv getting regularly mauled by Cloke one out in the square... was like watching a buffalo calf being taken down by a lion. You are correct, he was best as third man up, he could read the ball coming in extremely well.

I know what you are saying, MS, but I only remember Rivers being mauled by Cloke once, and even that day he was on the back end of some scrubby, floaty kicks that landed in Cloke's lap. Rivers is harshly judged for that match. Rivers often held his own against other Great Apes. My initial point was that his first year was a success because he was able to go third man up, but once other clubs worked him out, they spread their forwards so that Rivers could not leave his own man and get to a teammate's marking contest. Had he left his own bloke, he would have been caught betwixt and between. After that he became a reasonably reliable stopper man-on-man, but not a particularly eye catching defender, and that's how he ended up at Geelong.

No issues with him. He threw in the towel after 186 and clearly had his mind elsewhere. Best thing for both parties was that he left. Wasn't a huge loss. Appreciate his efforts 2004-2010.

Decided to leave when we couldn't afford to lose him...Chasing September on the back of other peoples work

Not in the same category as Frawley who gave up whilst still being paid

But ultimately a deserter...That is how i view Free Agency...

Yes we got new Young Talent in return....But who is there to teach them??

We do not have a leadership group......

Agreed all deserters should be immediately shot. Still hate seeing him in THAT jumper....but we move on.

Officially announced his retirement.

Well done on your career Riv.

I was not going to come to D Land this week after I turned the TV off at the end of the first quarter yesterday but I have to make an exception.

I always liked Riv and wish him well.

Nice that he mentioned the Dees fondly in his parting comments.

All the best for the future.

Good riddance.

Unnecessary. And good riddance? He already left the MFC.

All the best to him.

He's left the AFL, Sherlock.

And he's a turncoat, worse than just an opposition player.

I'm glad he experienced no success after leaving.

I suggest a dose sympathy and humility would not go astray Mach5

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
