I remember reading in an interview with Jako saying his favorite pastime was fishing with Billy Bennett.

Disagree. His body ( chronic back problems) destroyed the gem.

If anything during his short career, he certainly made the most of his time at MFC and did it crowd pulling showmanship that is sadly lacking in the AFL.

His playing career at MFC lasted a little over 3 years for 47 games as a forward kicking 201 goals 159 points. Absolutely phenomenal average of 7 scoring shots per game.

I struggling to think of a player with as short a career and had a similar or greater impact.

Yeah umm I was sort of responding to HH suggesting he hoped Petracca would became the next Jako. You know, with Christian already being sidelined with a major injury it's not a great hope to have for the kid. As for Jako, he's not the exact reason I support Melbourne but pretty much cemented the idea. Felt like he averaged more scoring shots alone than the entire team together can manage nowadays.

'Chopper' Lovell used to tell a great story about Jako at training where there would be times where Jako would train for 10-15 minutes, claim he needed to go to the toilet and then not return.

It's also been mentioned that during these times things would go missing from a few peoples bags as well.

I still love the great man. What a player he was!

One of my favourite memories of the great man occurred not quite on the field. He was walking off up the race after he played a great game at Scumville, drinking from his water bottle. Some mentally defective filth supporting child could be seen throwing foul abuse at Jaka. Without looking, Jaka squirted his water bottle at the retard, hitting it squarely in its face. Beautiful. I can't find the clip anywhere unfortunately.

IIRC Round 1 1994 v Geelong he kicked 8.8 with at least one out of bounds on the full. Followed it up in Round 2 with 4.10 against Hawthorn at Waverley.

Was a sensational player when 'on'.

That Hawthorn game he missed a shot on the run from the top of the goal square with no one in front of him.

Later that quarter snaps one from 50 out on the boundary with barely a look at the goals.

That's Jakovich in a nutshell.

sory if this was mentioned earlier but didnt Jacka sissor kick one of those goals against the roos (jackaroo!) when they were rebulding the southern stand if I recall.

Another great game was the Jacka and Bennett show at Windy Hill one yr when we snuck an impossible win at least 6 goals down at 3/4 time. Dad and I were in the essendon member with my melbourne jumper on (no 13 of course) and dads wins $1000 off his lawyer mate who got us in there. Im sure he paid it back at some stage...

Sorry to bust your bubble but that Windy Hill game was round 16, 1990. Jakovich came to the Demons in 1991.

Bennett definitely played that day though and "used Van Der Haar like a stepladder" as the commentators said.

Geez going well today. mustve been ricky jackson. Thats what you get when year rolls onto another. Still saw every Victorian game he played and i can vouch he was one of the very best ive seen in a short career. Was it Ricky Jackson that day?

This had to be Allen's best game....

Only those at the game could understand what i mean

The Victoria Park Slag Heap was not a nice place to visit..

Allen started slowly.....

Who else on here was there at this game in '92?

I was at that game as a 7 year old. I couldn't believe they played AFL footy at a place like that. The crowd were absolutely giving it to Jacko and he just kept giving them the bird. it was amazing.

Fantastic footage, Wight & Stynes combining in some lace out passes, beautiful to watch. I recall this game. Me & mate went straight to Vic park after playing a game at Albert Park that morning duffle bags and all and had the best afternoon watching the great man. In fact we waited 1/2 hr after the game to walk across the ground and saw to piescumbags punching on in the stand with blood, glass and all. Clearly they werent impressed but that was standard at ol Vic Park, it was a brothel. Go dees

John Coleman is comparable but even he played 98 games I think?

I was there swyl one of my favourite games I've attended. Was 10 years old and going off my nut singing Grand Old Flag walking out of the ground while my old man got dirty looks haha

Also went to that game with my Collingwood uncle and his Demon mate. Used to love going to away games in the suburban days was always great if you could get a win at Windy Hill, Vic Park, Western Oval or Moorabbin.

Best hamburger I've ever had at the footy was from Vic Park that day tho ;) Real food off a BBQ with coleslaw none of this processed [censored] you get at the corporate venues these days.

The toilets were another thing altogether though...

i wonder if jako ever had a skin-fold test - lol

Only applicable if he had not been circumcised in those days.

Yep i miss the "tribal" Home grounds...I think losing them was the worst thing the AFL ever did

EPL still has home grounds....Etihad is garbage...i refuse to set foot inside it

Sometime in the future i believe the Home grounds will return....The Club Members will demand it

Attendances are falling rapidly for a reason.

Yeah Ricky was on that day.

Ricky took two contested marks the goal square, I think, that day.

Bennett kicked 4 in the last quarter with the wind.

I also remember Joe Rugolo kicking a couple from the boundary.

Was that the same game?

I was at the Bennett win with Baghdad Bob. He was having a contre-temps with a Big bloke in an Ess jumper in front of us. Bob said.." why don't you shut up, mate, you're wearing your IQ on your back!" He said...." I haven't got anything on my back!"

We laughed like hell. He got murderous. We moved away.(forgetting our mate had gone to the bar to buy us a few cans!"

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
