Chris Dawes

As much as his marking has been a liability, yesterday he finally got some reward from the umpires for all the chopping of the arms and holding on that he constantly receives.

I thought exactly the same thing Clint. Robbie Tarrant must have felt terribly ripped off - he only defended against Dawes the same way every other defender has since he's been here, ie scragging, holding and chopping his arms, but he was the first one to get pinged for it.

do bluebottles fly dc ? just a thought.... :)

just found that rotten bug, ( Blue Ant - Diamma bicolor) it could replace that white ant on their jumpers, with a red background

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_ant

of course they fly d-l. that's why i chose them - blues and flying - and the fact their species name is calliphora vomitoria

just read this od.

do you know something? I hope we are after a Carlisle or Henderson, or other I haven't thought of who is already in the 23Yrs+ bracket... someone who'll be coming towards they're prime in 1 or 2 years time.

Dawes I hope, has a new deal elsewhere, that we haven't heard of yet?

He will be at the MFC in 2016 Who would take him?

I pray that in 2016 we have a better list that does not make him an automatic selection ever week.

The man that got us Jesse Hogan

Onya Neeldy

The man who got us Toumpas instead of Wines, onya Neeldy

I'm hoping Frost will be that 2nd forward target.

We need him in defence..

We need him in defence..

A lot of people banking on Frost. We haven't really seen much of him.

It's odd that Chris Dawes brings out so much derision on here, given that he would be one of the first selected every week. The selectors/coaches obviously see him as a much more valuable player than the haters on Demonland. I wonder how many of those haters have really analysed the reasons why this is? Do you all think you might be missing something? Who do you want him to be? Jarryd Roughead, Jack Darling, Jesse Hogan? He isn't, but nor is he Jesse White or Liam Jones. He's got limitations and he knows it, but his presence as a big, hard working physical presence in the forward line who demands significant attention from a key defender is vital to this current team. Look to the future by all means, but accept that Dawes is a big part of the Dees as they stand and whether he really deserves the whinging, moaning negativity he gets......every week. I wonder what Jesse Hogan thinks of him?

And what we have seen reveals limitations as well. Most players have them oddly. Frost is not a great mark, and an ordinary kick. He may yet be an essential part of the Dees for the next 5-7 years, but his real status is unknown.

I wonder what impact Dawes' personality has with his working relationship with Hogan? One thing I've noticed is that they never get in each others way - I put this down to both mutual smarts and Dawes' awareness of his place in the world.

He says himself that Hogan is #1 and he's a battler, but accepts it and doesn't lose confidence from it. It's an admirable personality trait.

Spot on Nash.

Dawes always puts the team first, something we haven't had enough of from our players over the last few years.

Obviously yesterday's game was a ripper and further proof of what he is capable of - he just needs to do that more consistently and we will have a dangerous forward line on our hands.

Dawes was brought in to be the number two man behind Clark, it's the role he played at Collingwood with Cloke. No one should have every expected him to be the number one man and while his output this year has been down I still think he adds valuable structure.

These flogs weren't able to have their usual whinge this week cos Dawesy was fantastic, so all the hate has gone to Lumumba

Not sure that is true C & B

Dawes is still near the top the low performers for me.

In 2015 he has played 2 -3 games that justified his selection.

Hardly a good result for the amount he is paid.

We will know we are on the way up when he is not an automatic selection.

I think most of these 'flogs' are just supporters who want their players performing at or close to their best, week in week out.

Agree with the last sentence OD, although the previous sentences are debatable. Overall he has not lived up to our expectations, however, I think he has played a role. He provides a contest in the air and on the ground and big man muscle around the ground. There is little doubt that he puts in effort and is a team player. For me his attitude gets him across the line. I just think that like most of our players we know what we have in Dawes and the endless debate on players like Dawes is pointless. He will play good games and poor games but he is still a better option than others on the good days.

Agree with that Ernest the big problem for me is the poor games easily exceed the good ones.

All I said was that he was fantastic last week. Which is clearly true. The rest of your post does not relate to what I said.

No most of them just have a list with a few names on it that they take the opportunity to sledge at every opportunity, regardless of what actually happens on the field

If you're over the age of 21 and get a decent contract then God help you if you stuff up

I think you're exaggerating. It's a forum, where people discuss the performances of players etc. Here, you're destined to get a few headcases and extremists but for the most part, the criticism is level and fair.

Dawes has not been doing as much as he could be for the most part of the season, that's a fact.

Edit: Do you think in his time at Melbourne, he has justified his contract (which is probably $500K plus)?

Sadly C & B that is the world of professional sport.

You get paid big bucks to perform.

If you don't live up to the Hype than you are discarded as quickly as the contract will allow.

NO

I've never understood why supporters care about what the players are paid. It has no impact on what happens once the player steps out on to the field, so why worry?

As far as I'm concerned, Josh Mahoney is there to lose sleep over player contract value so I don't have to.

Django, you've just illustrated the flaws and frankly personal offensive presumptions that is much of the criticism of Dawes on here. How could you possibly know he hasn't been doing as much as he could? To call it a 'fact' is indefensible. You and I have no idea whether he's giving his all, but I'm pretty sure the club has a much better idea. Whether he's 'justified' his salary is equally fraught. He is being paid the salary that market forces allowed him when he was contracted to the MFC. Justifying it depends only on him doing as much as he can, thus we come back to the original point. Any expectations of him being a better footballer, with a greater output than he is or has shown are entirely yours. And your expectations are based on WHAT knowledge of him as a man or of his innate abilities? Precious little I think.

It’s Pink Lady night at Princes Park — a vibey Friday evening setting for a high-stakes clash between second-placed Melbourne and eleventh-placed Essendon. The wind-sheltered IKON Park, a favourite ground of the Demon players, promises flair, fire and a touch of pink. Melbourne has never lost a home-and-away game here, though the ghosts of two straight-sets finals exits in 2023 still linger.

  • 2025 Player Reviews: # 1 Steven May

The premiership defender has shown signs of wear and tear due to age, and his 2025 season was inconsistent, ending poorly with a suspension and a noticeable decline in performance. The Demons are eager to integrate younger players onto their list and have indicated that they may not be able to guarantee him senior games next season, in what would be the final year of his contract.

The young key tall failed to make progress during the season, with a decline in his goal kicking output. His secondary role as a backup ruckman, which may have hindered his ability to further develop his game, and he was also impacted by the team's poor forward connection. It will be interesting to observe his performance under a new coaching regime.
