Some serious questions asked about Paul Roos ...

Roosy is on pretty good terms with himself, so I'll back him as the kingmaker while he holds the official title of senior coach.

Therefore opening the way for probable discussion on ...well why should we have Roos there for the 3rd year when he's costing us a packet.... .

Of which I would probably respond with ...well you see there's this thing called transition,

I'm a fan of Roos, best thing that has happened to this club in a long time besides Jackson. I don't think Roos is costing us anything, in fact I think he makes us money from membership to sponsorship.

And yes it did work well with Horse, but what was the process and what did they do when there was a divergence of views? That's what I'm interested in and it's what I'm asking.

But if I was Goodwin, who is hoping to become a career senior coach, and there were decisions being made by Roos that I disagreed with but would impact my ability to achieve success I'd find that a very difficult situation.

Hypothetical situations about the opinions of Roos vs Goodwin on certain players can be debated but don't seem all that realistic given the input of Taylor and co.

That said, I think Roos is savvy and reasonable enough to know that with Goodwin being the inheritor of the team, he should have a significant say in its makeup going forward. If Goodwin felt passionately enough about a certain player, I think he'd get his way. As a matter of speculation, I'd say he was the one driving strongest to get Melksham who is now at the club.

So much of the OP supposes that Roos would go out of his way to pick a coach who is diametrically different in outlook and priorities.

Cant see that being the case....

No doubt the game style will be more attacking under Goodwin, but i think the way they view the game and the way they believe sustained success is built will be very similar, Roos number 1 goal will be to make sure we stay the course once he's gone.

Its interesting how people assume that Paul Roos, a competitive premiership coach with an ego would not be wanting to orchestrate an amazing finish to his time as head coach at Melbourne, and would instead be meekly passing the batten early to an untried junior coach a year early.

2016 is his last year as coach and I'd assume he will continue to be responsible for everything a head coach is, and, I would hope, be pushing for his final game as coach to be in mid to late September.

Roos will be a big factor this year.

that's what i want Paul. It is quite weird the fact that so many on here want Roosy to walk out the side door quietly after Round 23 next year!!

I want Roosy to hand over the Baton in front of at least 85,000 people in September....

if we play finals next year, strong possibility Roosy regrets not hanging around a bit longer i reckon, with the core we are starting to build, couple more young guns coming through the draft this year, doing something like Hawthorn is not out of the question.

It took Hawthorn 6 years after recruiting Hodge and Mitchell to play finals. Even Franklin and Roughead didn't play finals until their third year. Ditto for Ablett and the other stars Geelong recruited in 2001.

There are a few people around here getting a bit ahead of themselves.

If Goodwin is truly the man to take us forward, I'd be very disappointed if it isn't his team in everything bar title next year. Roos can take the press conferences and public scrutiny, Goodwin can run the football side.

I reckon that's the deal, Roosy is the MFC's bullet shield this season, he will take all the heat and let Goodwin settle into the role over the year

I have a question about him.

How does a Donvale boy get to become a Zen master?

Mate, I went to school with Gregory Roberts (Shantaram) .. and I turned out quite normal.

Says you.

It's true - I really did go to school with him.

He lived near me for some time.

You could have been something had you not wasted your literary talents in a secure job.

Hopefully your novel will be far more succinct.
