Footy injury (recovery) question...

Featured Replies

Already tried that and it didn't work... not sure if it was my singing, the mint, of the fact that I used a mint tea bag. Oh, and coriander doesn't work either... or basil, or thyme (I was told it would take thyme to heal properly).

Sounds like a roast leg of lamb recipe!

Not the whole leg.. just the knee ;-)

Just a quick update on my son's injury (I know you've all been hanging out for it)...

Not good. It was just as well I took teh advice of a number of posters here and got the MRI done (so sincere thanks to all). I took my son and scans today to see a Sports Physician Dr George Pitsus who is also a medico for the Cronulla NRL team (yes I asked him about Dank, and he told me that he came in as a part of the club rebuild following the scandal).

The following was evident from the scans (Webber and some others may understand)... high grade partial thickness tear of the anterior cruciate ligament with hyperintensity, irregularity and detachment of the ligament evident both proximally at the femoral attachment and distally at the tibial attachment. Transitional contusions in the lateral femoral and tibial condyle and the medial femoral condyles. Grade 2 tear of the medial collateral ligament. Oh, and there was a small piece of bone detached.

And in case you didn't understand that, it essentially means his knee is pretty [censored] and he is in need of a reconstruction that will happen in about 6 weeks; so his footy season is done and in a year where they look like taking out the prize for the first time in a while (well, since before he joined). Poor bugger.

What amazes me is that when I have seen these injuries in the AFL, the player involved is usually writhing around in agony... Liam barely flinched and shed not a tear. I can only assume these things are much worse as you get older.

Really sorry to hear about the result for your son. At least he is young and in good hands. Kids of that age heal remarkably well and I'm sure he will get a good outcome. All the best to you both - Dads suffer too in this situation

Sorry to hear it, hardtack. Hope the young bloke is keeping his chin up for what sounds like quite a long period of no sport.

wow, that sounds pretty nasty hardtack. definitely beyond bill mitchell's area of expertise

hope the operation is a great success and the young feller recovers quickly

hope there'll be plenty of premierships for him down the track

So you'll have to take my advice after all and see the correct professional: an orthopedic surgeon. Make sure you get good advice on your choice of surgeon.

Hardtack it would be good to get the occasional update on Liam's progress. I think all here would be interested

Hear, hear. Please do, hardtack.

Obe... Paul O'Brien did his knee years back, whilst giving Kevin Bartlett a toweling down.

He did it in the 2nd half, shortly after the break. It was always my impression that he tweaked it in the first half (maybe partial tear) & then after the main break it went.

He was remonstrating with the umpire, jumping into the air whilst twisting, and landed still twisting, it popped.

I'm glad you found the truth for your boys situation,,, less damage done this way. some do so much damage, it can be a mess.

hardtack, there was a legendary trainer down at south melbourne called mitchell

i would have advised you to seek him out, but he passed on a few years ago

i had a similar thing once. after 5 minutes with him i only missed a week

Old Bill Mitchell the man with the magic hands. I twisted a knee when I was 22. All the medicos said I needed open knee surgery.

No arthroscope so back then. Bill worked on my knee twice 10 min. each time, I didn't play good grade football, but I did play football after that. It lasted until 1996 until it had to have surgery. This time it was an arthroscope, day surgery.

The man was a miracle man.

I was there that day. Hungry was always so good at milking a free from nothing. He'd been doing it all day. It was such a bizarre way to do a knee, jumping up in the air to remonstrate and coming down and collapsing, pretty much never to play again. I didn't know about the earlier knick that probably explains it. He looked like he was going to be a star.

That's terrible news, especially at his age. I wish you both a speedy recovery. They say the healing process is much better the younger you are.

I read a player saying somewhere very recently, the last month or so, that when they did their knee it was a short sharp stab of pain as they did it and then no pain at all. Sounds like what your son went through.

Thought I would provide a distraction from the weekend disaster by giving a status update on my son's condition (I know you have all been anxiously waiting :) ).

We consulted with the surgeon last week (Dr Anthony Leong - a top knee reconstructionist apparently) and he is giving it until the middle of next month after which another MRI will be done to see if it is managing to repair itself before he makes a final judgement on surgery. The reason for that is that with my son being just 13, he is concerned about having to drill through the growth plates as there is a very slim chance (<1%) that the growth of the knee could be affected which could result in a deformity; he is still of the opinion that surgery will most likely be required based on how the knee feels to him.

I think the hardest part for him now (apart from not being able to play for at least 12 months) is that his team had their first loss for the season in the game during which he was injured, and they have since lost 2 more including the first major semi final. We have been going to each match to provide support, but I think he is finally realising just how important he was to the team's structures... poor bugger.

The down side to all of this is that my position at work has been made redundant and as of Sept 7 I will be out of work. Fortunately the medical coverage provided by the company extends two weeks beyond that date and the HR person I have been dealing with is attempting to get that extended. Hopefully all will be ok and I will be able to use Dr Leong as I really don't want to have to rely on what the public system throws our way.

On the positive side, my band played its first gig on Saturday night and seemed to be received pretty well... and will play again this Friday.

Sorry to hear that, Make sure you claim on the club's insurance, if not the ground management for leaving a pothole on the ground,

don't know if the earlier knock Pre halftime knicked it, but I did see see & remember him doing something to his knee leg in the 2nd Qtr, late I think... hoped it was nothing serious, but then after half time,,,,, bugger. I think his brother won the gift that weekend at Stawell.

the docs weren't as good at knees back in those days, it was the start of the knee surgery explosion, new surgery methods started shortly there after, with the movement machine, exercising the knee shortly after surgery.

It's Game Day and the Demons will be running out on the field with a new Head Coach, albeit a caretaker, for the first time in 3,060 days when they face the Western Bulldogs at the MCG today. What do you want to see from the Demons in the first match of the Post Simon Goodwin era?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
