Not sure what all the fuss is about. He spent 3 years at Western Jets. A fair bit of this year working out of Eastern Ranges. Add to that the lessons he'd have learned at both Collingwood & Melbourne I'd think he has a good background for a Development Coach.

If he was appointed Senior Coach then yeah, PMSL but this seems Neeld's go.

I was happy to see him get the lemonade from here when he did but we have to move on. We spend far too much time looking backwards. Have for 50 years

As someone pointed out earlier, it's good to see the likes of Neeld & McCartney get a gig in the industry. Hopefully Sanderson is picked up somewhere as well. They may have had failings at the top job but they all have a wealth of knowledge to impart to players

50 years ago we didn't need to look back and if we did it was all good. But if we don't learn from our mistakes we are bound to repeat them.

Perhaps. I also think there's more to "he was told to be a hard arse" than is being acknowledged. I remember an interview with Jimmy where he was saying he wanted Neeld to "toughen them up", and there were similar remarks from Lyon. There may not have been specific instructions, but I think the message was pretty clear - and not just from within the club. Everyone thought that we were soft.

In response, and for whatever reason - misjudgement, inexperience, incompetence - Neeld got it wrong. But on the evidence of his previous track record, he also knows how to get it right - albeit in a different role/context.

I think he was on a hiding to nothing. The club had deep seated problems and he was under specific instructions from those that appointed him to be a hard ass I.e G Lyon et al.

I tend to agree, he was flawed but also a victim. After 186 and the sacking of Bailey there was no way the team could come together whilst those above Neeld who were the root cause of the problem remained at the club. His hard arse approach and dancing to Schwab's and Connoly's tune whether by instruction or not made things worse. Lyons role was that of a good mate to the wrong friends. Neeld desperate for a senior gig failed to recognise the shyte hole he fell into. If Neeld came into a more stable and happy club he may have done better. Anyone else coaching us in the same environment would have been doomed also.

Essendon with all their current troubles are likely the only club that will entertain hiring him as most other candidates will see them as poison at the moment. Neeld is at risk of repeating the same mistake as when he joined us. He was hasty on getting a senior coach job that he overlooked the underlying problems. Now he is going to club with different but deep problems and an uncertain future.

They need to deal with the short term problemms of the ASADA issues and IMO they certainly need to jettison Hird, Reid and Little. But longer term they have a sounder basis for existence than a number of other clubs.

Neeld has not worked in the past 16 months so he is hardly hasty. And he certainly wasnt hasty when he took the MFC job either.

This bloke took on the job, he thought he had the goods and he was found to be an absolute shocker. In fact he may go down as the worst coach ever of the MFC.

As much as I think Lyon and others stuffed up in recommending him, this bloke thought he was God's gift to coaching! Ask some of the players about his people management!!

It was very poor indeed ! Nup don't paint him as anything else than a woulda, shoulda, coulda!! Our gain at not having him around is exquisitely Essendopes further sinking into the Abyss!

Bailey took over a team that had won five games in 2007 and at the end of that year lost players like Bizzell, Nathan Brown, Ferguson, Godfrey, Johnstone, Pickett and Ward. I can't be bothered adding up how many games of experience that is but it's a lot. Oh, and the 5 games included the Carlton game where they let us win.

In the next few years we lost Yze, White, Robbo and Neitz who were all well past their prime when Dean arrived. He concentrated on list development at the expense of winning games but still managed to win about 40% of games played in his last two seasons.

The topic is Mark Neeld's appointment at the bombers, not the decisions made at the MFC when Bagdad Bob was in tenure vs when he wasn't. It's tiring and ridiculous.

I work from the starting point that no coach comes to the club to do it harm - they all come with good intentions.

We talk about due diligence. Neeld was a very capable and well respected assistant coach. Bailey the same.

I am very glad that neither is coaching the club but I wish no ex coach ill will just because he was a dismal failure.

It also doesn't follow IMO that if you were a good assistant and a failed head coach that you can't go back to being a good assistant ( that's you Brendan !!)
