My main worry is how it manifests in the minds of our players. Camaraderie and culture are cultivated when everyone's on the same page and working to the same outcome. What happens to a team when its leader has already signalled he'll be jumping off at the next station?

You know as well as everyone why he won't remain senior coach. He has a wife/family, football is an 80 hour a week job, and sooner or later it's time for the former rather than the latter. He's been clear that they'll move to Hawaii, that his wife also has a life/business/future and that things are already in place in that regard, and even adding one year on to the original two was stretching things.

Maybe after three years a younger coach like Goodwin will be the answer.

Very impressed with Roos. Took his time evaluating players, works well with the administrators of the club, always measured and not afraid to point out the competition's anomalies as they impact the club he represents.

Plenty of good stuff to come.

This is a ridiculous thread. You don't get to choose Roos' terms. You choose Roos for 3 or no Roos. We should be comforted that 3 years of Roos is better than 10 years of most, and then Goodwin learns from Roos and takes over seamlessly with Roos still present. instead of parroting what others have said why don't you answer the question - 4 wins 2014, 6 wins 2015, 8 wins 14 losses in 2016 then Goodwin has his debut season as a head coach in the AFL - will you be happy with that ?

I may have missed where on the board this conversation has been going on - but was anybody else a little surprised and disappointed at the news that Goodwin has been 'locked in' as the next coach?

I was pretty confident that all this talk of succession was just theatre - a way for Roos to leave a back door unlocked in case everything goes '[censored] up'

However, it would seem that the 3-year tenure was actually all on the level.

I don't understand it - why is Roos not like every other coach in the comp; looking to build a list and teach them a plan, to stay on board as long as they'll have him, to incrementally achieve successes until the ultimate one - and then try to back it up again and again.

Is he really just going to disappear if he has this mob in the top 8 at the end of 2015? What's this 'role' he is apparently going to stay in? Why doesn't he just remain senior coach if he is still going to be around?

I have had an uneasy feeling about this half-hearted commitment to the club since day one. So pre-season 2016 we are back to the drawing board are we?

Goodwin to me provides no more confidence than Bailey or Neeld. He is just another apprentice with no runs on the board.

Used Lyons game plan.
Handed over to Longmire when the list aged and become time to rebuild.

As odd as it may sound, perhaps Roos has other things he'd like to do with his like than working 60 hour weeks under extreme scrutiny to achieve something he's already done...

It doesn't bother me toooo much, that said if we draft his son I'll be asking questions about motivation.

I don't doubt for a second he's giving 100% EVERY day.

My point was that by his own admission (I've only read that in these very pages mind you rather from Roosy himself) the rebuild is a 5 year project, he's signed on for 3 (it's obviously at least a 5 year thing nonetheless). Well 3 out of 5 is not 100% in anyone's language.

Most coaches sign on with an intention of taking a team to a Premiership (100% success) rather than a designated period at 100% effort. Of course most coaches fail in that, but that's their intent.

That's all I'm saying. Not saying it won't/can't work.

If nothing else we have stability in place, Roos always said his goal was to build the foundation from which we would become a competitive club and from there we have a new coach with philosophies similar to Roos but a new (hopefully upward) direction.

Well what in the world are you going to do about it? Serious question there... so you're not happy we get Roos for the 3 years he promised us and that Goodwin will take over after working closely under Roos for 2 of those years. Fantastic. Super. But what the hell can you do about it? Go on mate, be angry. I know you like being that way so you can jump on here and fly off the handle. But you're getting annoyed/angry/worried about something that is totally out of our control. Roos said 2-3 years from the start - we might have held on to the notion that he will stay longer, and while he will in some capacity, he has stuck to his word through everything.

All we can do is trust in Roos and PJ that they have chosen the right man to take over from Roos when he finishes. He did that with Longmire, and look how that worked out. Ross Lyon did as well and look how that worked out. We are finally looking stable across the board as a club yet you still look to find some form of fault in it, and it's something we can do nothing about. Roos has the proven track record there and I choose to trust in his decisions. God only knows that he has more runs on the board than a Bailey or Neeld ever did.
