I disagree. It was an inspired pick. We didn't play safe and we chose someone virtually unknown who became the most exciting player not just on our list but (for a very short time) just about the whole competition. When Liam was at his best we had excitement. That it couldn't be maintained was a footballing tragedy.

I can accept that Cook and Scully were "bad picks" for different reasons. Jurrah, on the other hand was a great pick unable to maintain the commitment necessary for a variety of reasons. In the unlikely event he could convince the club that he was genuine about committing to the rigours of AFL one more time, I'd be prepared to put him on the rookie list as much to help him as to help us.

this is the same style of recruiting melbourne has always gone for over the decades, apart from between 80's - mid 90's.

a clean shiny 'Pair of Heels', is too much to resist for the Demon recruiting throng. & so we miss the engine room workers. eg; we would never have considered a Diesel Williams over a david cordner

PSD I normally find myself agreeing with your thoughts. Not so much this one.

I think when reviewing that trade period the issue to highlight - and perhaps lesson to learn for the forthcoming draft - was that by having a few NQR's clogging up our list we weren't able to use a late National Draft pick on Rockliff and still pick Jurrah in the PSD. With the caveat that I'm assuming Rockliff was eligible to be taken in the National Draft back then.

He was eligible and every club passed him. However he was playing more in the forward line, kicked an absolute ton in the U18's but most clubs considered him as too unfit and believed he would never develop the tank required for AFL.

I bet now all those recruiters are eating their own words watching him play week after week.

In hindsight considering most clubs thought he would never make it, Jurruh was still the right option. However as you mentioned, it would have been bloody nice to see the club take "that punt" on Rockliff with one of those late ND picks. I always find it frustrating seeing the club pass on players due to a perceived lack in some physical trait whom acquire excellent numbers in their U18 year. More recently the selection of Hunt (nothing against him per say) over Templeton or Honeychurch is a good example - Hunt could have been picked up in the Rookies.

Who's to say Rockliff would've turned out as he is now? It's the sliding doors principle, player development has been highlighted as a failing for a long time. For all we know he would've languished at Casey if we'd taken him.

I don't think Jurrah was a bad pick up, things changed dramatically for him back home and he made some bad choices.

A lot of boxes would need to be ticked before this would happen but I'd consider a rookie pick on him.

Wouldn't pick him up, not sure a lot of our female supporters would appreciate us giving a spot to a guy who was convicted of punching his wife in the face then kicking her when she was on the ground.

i think melbourne made the right choice in drafting Jurrah, unfortunately Jurrah made a few wrong choices with his life that spoiled it for both of us, sadly more so for him.
