The jailing of journalist Peter Greste

It's a strange world when former Murdoch editor Rebekah Brooks walks free on hacking charges in the UK while Australian journalist Peter Greste and his Al Jazeera colleagues are jailed for 7 years for doing their jobs in Eqypt.

There are a number of ways to protest against this outrageous decision and to show your support for Peter and his family, who must be living through a nightmare at the moment.

* You can write to the Egyptian Embassy in Canberra and register your disgust: [email protected]

* You can write to Peter and his family to show your support: [email protected]

* And you can sign the Amnesty International online petition protesting the decision and demanding the journalists be freed: http://www.amnesty.org.au/action/action/33972/

Yes those holiday photos with his family that the prosecution put forward were pretty daming after all! Really what is going on?The President says he will not be putting forward pardons because he does not want to interfere with the independent judiciary. Well really I think he may have already been in the judge's ear. The judgements show that. The verdicts are absurd. Give us a break. Egypt is going nowhere fast.

Glad I ticked off a visit to Egypt about five years ago. I wouldn't be going there now. This verdict is beyond a joke. The leaders involved need to sit up and take notice and not bury their heads in the sand.

Get this guy free.

Yes, true.

But I can't help think that the parents should stop talking to the media. They are IMO making his situation much worse. Greste is not in a western jail, so they should desist with their media campaign & let the pollies & diplomats work quietly in the background.

The arab spring is on in earnest, & those people will not let journo's of easily, of publicly. They want the journo's out, & to not return.

Lets hope something can be worked out...

I think this is happening now DL, it seems to have gone a bit quiet and I wonder whether there might be some progress being made behind the scenes.

Let's hope so.

I think the family's seeming Pre-Occupation in trying to use the very media that the Arabs want to shut up; isn't very diplomatic of the family.

It sounds to me, that the family are just trying to play the victim.

IMO opinion, they are wastng their time. & making things worse for their son.

better leave it to the diplomats

I doubt that the family are doing anything to jeopardise the situation - they would be in regular contact with the diplomats / foreign affairs people and would be taking and acting on their advice at all times.

They weren't just doing their jobs, AlJazeera is a mouth piece for the Muslim Brotherhood, the biggest blight on this planet. If you side with a terrorist organization as Peter Greste did, then accept the consequences. Do not blame the new secular Egyptian government from attempting to clean house.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
