Players to target at the end of the year

Recommended Posts

191cm, yes he is.

No, because of last years trade that doesnt make sense. We gave up pick 2 for Tyson and pick 9.

Tyson>Atley (Now and in the future)

pick 9>pick 11

It doesn't make sense because you're only acknowledging part of the trade (an early 2nd round pick was also involved).

If you think plowman at 191cm is key position height you are delusional. Let's run through some other key forward heights..

Hawkins-197cm

Cloke-196cm

Tippett-200cm

Kennedy-196cm

Did you watch hawthorn vs Geelong monday? Did you see what happens when 188cm Cheney took on 197cm Hawkins? What about Andrew walker who is 190cm, you think he is key position defensive height too?

Absolutely he is a KPP, he played that role in 2011 at Full forward.

(Andrew Walker)

Also, yes Plowman plays KPP, every single week

Surprised not that many mentions of Andrew Gaff.

In terms of targeting he would be top of my list.

...because at the moment he is one bad game away from the WAFL. Very much an outside player who struggles to get his own ball. Not what we need.

Gaff doesn't excite me. He's also too outside for our needs at the moment.

I'm all for Prestia. & I'd like to keep an eye on Gaffs progress over the next 2 years.

but we can't go too young, we also need more vigorous 24 Yr olds, atmo. Even Rosa @ 27 Yrs.

are there any mature half back flankers 23Yrs + out about?

I know gaff is mentioned as an elite runner, is from Melbourne, & was a Dees supporter. I hear he's a bit outside at the moment, but is churning out good running, & is a regular in the eagles senior teams for a couple of years, so should have a number of games up.

Prestia looked great in the replay & hard at it inside player & very good competitor. looks like a Mitchell type.

Yes I hear that, but is an elite runner & was touted as a top ball user If I recall correctly.

worth keeping an eye on his progress.

Downhill skier and not what we need

and those asking for Shuey very settled here in WA and repaying Meth Coast for supporting him through his initial struggles with injury and the tragic death of his sister

Was not aware of that, very good of the club then.

Nice to see an AFL player repay them in a meaningful way with years of service. Far too many are just in it for the money nowadays.

Callum Sincair worth chasing up, signed a 2 year contract which should be up at the end of this season. Due to the aura which surrounds Nic Nat, Sinclair is not being rewarded for his good form and may like to try his luck elsewhere and return to Victoria

Malcevski getting on with terrible leg injury history. ( Higher risk)

Sewell also in the twilight. ( Higher Risk)

Others look ok I reckon and I love the idea of GWS and the Suns preparing them for us.

Would throw the stand at one of the GWS key forwards.

I think he would be worth chasing, looks pretty athletic and it would be good to have a ruckman who could add to the midfield rather than be a liability.

Not looking at key players, but from the interstate clubs, here’s some names to think about.

From the Crows:

With Walker their key forward and Lewis Johnston a young SA boy, Josh Jenkins and Luke Thompson would be nice to bring back to Victoria. Can’t see the former leaving however – he and Walker should be their key players up forward. The Crouch brothers would be unreal, but extremely unlikely. Sam Kerridge is the epitome of a big-bodied mid, but he’s also their #1 tagger in 2014. Jarryd Lyons seems to be on the outs. Wouldn’t go near McKernan, but Sam Shaw would be okay for a later pick.

From Brisbane:
Jordan Lisle can play forward and back as a KPP, while Ryan Lester is the sort of prototypical big-bodied midfielder that we seem to be keen to bring into the club. Brisbane are like us a few years ago – lots of senior bodies, lots of kids, and not much in-between. If they lose more players at the end of this year due to mass walk-outs they’re in for a world of pain.

From Fremantle:

Tom Sheridan and Hayden Crozier are two of their 22-26 list players, and like Michie last year might look for more opportunities at a club back in Victoria. They’ve been subs a lot. One of Zac Clarke / Jack Hannath / Jon Griffin might look for an opportunity to play elsewhere. Lachie Neale is a pocket dynamo, but I can see him back at the Crows rather than heading to Victoria. Matt Taberner and Tanner Smith might be looking for greater opportunities.

From GC17:

Tim Sumner fits the prototype, but hasn’t shown the athletic capability to run through the middle of the park. Daniel Gorringe can’t get a look in as a ruckman; I expect him to head to the Crows. I don’t know why Jesse Lonergan hasn’t played a game this year (injured?), but his form for Tasmania two years back was terrifically exciting – he’s very strong and hard at the contest. The Suns have to start to trim their list to meet list requirements, but there’s enough fat on it that other clubs might not want to touch.

From GWS:

We’d all love Dylan Shiel, but it’s going to be tough to prise him free. The one advantage is that the likes of Coniglio, Greene, Smith, Treloar and some bloke who doesn’t warrant it based upon performance per $$ are all way ahead of him in the pecking order of midfielders. Will Hoskin-Elliott is super-quick, but very up and down in terms of his application – reminds of a taller Blease. Adam Tomlinson or Kristian Jaksch would be handy as versatile KPP options to bring in. Matt Buntine and Jono O’Rourke were perhaps surprise top 5 picks, and are a long way from establishing themselves. Would have either of them at the Dees as they’d add to depth, and I think O’Rourke will eventually be a very good player. He ain’t no Macrae tho.

From Port:

Andrew Moore has been tearing it up in the SANFL but cannot break into the Power midfield. I remember him being very loose defensively, but it’s two years since I was close to the Power boys. He grew up a Demon supporter too, even tho he was the bloke who broke Blease’s leg in the school playground. John Butcher is a big risk but a potentially big reward. Cam O’Shea is a perfect third tall, he’s like Rivers reincarnate, but can’t get an ‘in’ in a tight defensive back six at Alberton, and would slot straight into our backline. Jarrad Redden has had a rotten run with injuries, but is a big unit and a big talent; he was rated as a better talent than the Lobster, and might be looking for a change of scenery. Ben Newton is a WA boy, but is a ball magnet just getting over a raft of injuries. Aaron Young has been used as a sub a lot, but has pace and guts.

From Sydney:

Tim Membrey is a KPP in a midfielder’s body; I have no idea whether he can become a strong inside mid or not – Cameron Ling did. I don’t believe Ryan O’Keefe will be able to go around again as a delisted free agent, as much as his pride might want him to do so. I’ve always rated Craig Bird, and he can’t get a look in as a starting mid for the Swans but he’d be a walk-up start at the Dees. Gary Rohan’s leg seems to be holding together, but his confidence seems shot – a change of scenery might do him the world of good? Would love to get Sam Reid or Luke Parker or both. Dan Hanneberry too. The Swans aren’t going to be under as much salary cap pressure as you might think as the likes of O’Keefe, Goodes, Richards, and Shaw will not play forever, so enticing players to leave is going to be harder than it would seem due to the Franklin / Tippett mega-salaries.

From Meth Coke:

Mitch Brown is talked of returning to Victoria every time he’s out of contract. Unlikely now, given he and McKenzie are their key defenders with Glass likely to retire at the end of the year. Andrew Gaff and Luke Shuey would be brilliant additions. Ashley Smith seems to be out of favour as a running defender. Matt Rosa as we know is an unrestricted free agent – but I can’t really see him picking the Dees as his club of choice. Scott Lycett would be very handy – again, another SA-born ruckman I’d expect the Crows (or the Power) to target. Some bloke called Nic Naitanui wants $1.1m every year for the next 5 years and some club might be just crazy enough to pay it and engineer a trade for him. Personally, I’m hoping he gets that sort of ridiculous coin to stay in WA and the likes of Gaff or Shuey are forced out as a result.

We another out and out gun midfielder like Dan Hanneberry ......should have plenty of cash to spend with Clarks retirement.

If not him then someone of his ilk.

Of course we also need another tall forward, id love Walker or Patton....but might just have to take the best young tall key position forward in the draft.

More speed would also be handy so we need to scour the country for a couple of good speedy mids with good tanks.

I think he would be worth chasing, looks pretty athletic and it would be good to have a ruckman who could add to the midfield rather than be a liability.

He rotated through the ruck with Paul Johnson last weekend resting in the forward line in the WAFL. Took some nice marks and kicked the sealer from a tight angle at about 40m with a wet ball.

In regards to players from the West

Freo

Crozier - maybe but has not shown much yet

Sheridan - has been poor this year and not sure if this is due to their side being less effective in the forward press which is resulting in teams getting a bit more space against them

Clarke - absolutley

Hannath - has dropped off this year but was very impressive in WAFL last season

Griffin - has been good recently but coming back from a decent knee injury

Meth Coast

Shuey - in a heartbeat

Gaff - IMO not worth a high trade or big coin, but good depth.

Ash Smith - avoid would be mid range in the VFL

Rosa - yes elite runner and goo duser of the ball

Lycett - no big turning circle like Paul Johnson which he gets away with at WAFL level but a liability at AFL level

worth watching

Subiaco

Greg Clark - played all his junior football as KPF good size and very athletic. around 192-3cm and has been given a run on the ball the last few weeks, well worth a look

Cody Grace - killed it at underage level but struggled a little as an underage player at colts, has put some serious size on in the preseason, plays in the forward line but has ability to rotate through the middle. Bit of Sylvia about the way he plays but looks to have the right attitude

    GAMEDAY: Rd 16 vs Brisbane

It's Game Day and the Dees are deep in the heart of enemy territory as they take on the Lions in Brisbane under the Friday Night Lights at the Gabba. Will the Demon finally be awakened and the season get back on track or will they meekly be sacrificed like lambs to the slaughter?

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

It's Game Day and it very well could be the last roll of the dice for the Demon's finals aspirations in 2024. A loss to the bottom side would be another embarrassing moment in a cursed year for the Dees whilst a win could be the spark they need to reignite the fire in the belly.
