The CEO writes an open letter to encourage lapsed members to re-join; sounds like a good idea to me.

Demonlanders looking for some sort of spin in the letter; seems like usual practice to me.

We are going to need every member to sign up so we can pay 100% of the salary cap, that way we can sign up better players and keep those we need to, Frawley for instance. I'm at a loss as to what some on here expected him to say, "don't any of you sign up until we've won 5 straight", would that be more acceptable.

I don't think PJ is a spin merchant, I find him a dispassionate CEO who is doing his job, which it to resurrect the club and so far he's put a lot of building blocks in place. If you were there last night and you spoke to the players you would understand just how happy they are that Roos and PJ are there and just how aware they are that the rest is up to them.

The club have put in place the best possible off field team and it's now up to the players to complete the second half of the deal.

another one! you really can be thik RF, when wanted, or is it mischievous again.

not saying there's spin, in his open letter.....

Speaking of thick, my post wasn't directed at you, I've stopped reading most of your "efforts" and only responded to this because I saw the RF at the top.

btw you should stop letting your 3 year old granddaughter help you with your posts, it looks very untidy and to be honest, rather stupid.

WYL you over there, ordinary members keep being gullible, is the reason we have suffered for 50 Years of rubbish. & you want to stay the same old same old.

stop being an Ostrich, & demand our club keep changing for the better. don't just sit on your hands & let the wind blow us about.

WE, ALL; have to maintain the honesty & hold those over there up high, to Account.

you are all too Wylling to trust, @ the first good signs.

we all have to toughen up & accept nothing less than straight & honest hardness from within our footy.

it is exactly what Jackson is doing DL.

It is you who is being gullable.

Bought your membership yet??

What an odd discussion. Clearly he said the sort of thing you'd expect him to say. It may be spin, but if it signs up a few more members who might not have joined otherwise, it's worth it.

Other than infecting opposition players in the first 5 rounds with the flu to ensure some wins, which I guess is illegal, what else could he do to round up some more members?

WYL I'ce said clearly plenty of rtimes since yesterday, I was not having a go at his letter, but to say that this honesty should not stop...

one letter does not make a new club. its only a start.

we have to remain vigilant.

* & yes, you tend to believe the drop of a hat... as son as you look up to someone you fall for them. I look up to no-one, & look down on no-one.

not you too, it wasn't a comment about his open letter. I didn't call his open letter Spin. everyone has the Wrong impression of the response, & refuse to hear the real intent.

& now all this is hijacking the thread.

my comment was about Not letting the honesty Die.

Just released from Peter Jackson:

Dear former members and supporters

I am writing to supporters and former members of the Melbourne Football Club who have not renewed their membership in the last year or so. If you have recently joined, or you intend joining this year, then I thank you for your support. This letter may still be of interest to you however.

You may have picked up some comments I made at the Clubs Annual General Meeting in early February that were reported throughout the media in relation to supporters who have not renewed their membership in recent years. I referred to the Club breaching your trust. If you are interested, the link to my address is link to website.

What I meant by breaching your trust is that the Clubs overall performance, on and off the field, over the last few years has not met members expectations or more importantly, the promises made to members. Members were told the football team would improve. Members would also not expect the Club to have to deal with some of the off-field issues that it did. I expect out of absolute frustration, many members gave up believing in the Club and allowed their membership to lapse.

This may not have been the case for all members who have not renewed in recent years. There may be other personal reasons for members not to continue with their membership. If that was the case for you, I respect that, and if those reasons still exist, I understand you cannot join.

However, I suspect the reason for the vast number who have not renewed, because there were 12,000 members over the 2 years 2012 and 2013 alone who did not renew, is a lack of trust in the performance of Club. It is understandable.

I came into the Club as CEO in May last year with a mandate to make some changes so the performance would improve. We have done that, with wholesale changes across the board, management and coaching panel. The highlight obviously is securing Paul Roos as Senior Coach, however the changes are much deeper than just Paul. We are focusing on the culture of the overall Club that is, the standards and behaviours that drive this football club.

Our Number 1 priority is to get the football team performing. That is our core business and that is what members expect and demand a sustainable competitive football team.

I am not going to try to tell you that all the work is done, and that we are already on the road to success. Youve heard that before. I do know though that in a very short time, the club has changed and is building the sort of culture that is necessary to succeed in an elite professional competition as tough as the AFL. I cannot tell you when that success will come, but it will come.

I am encouraged by the growth in membership this year that has come with the changes we have made. We look like improving our overall membership from the unacceptably low number of about 33,000 last year. We may well get to 37,000 this year. However, that is still way short of the number of members we need if we are to realistically compete on the field with the bigger clubs.

Membership is the lifeblood of all AFL clubs and is the biggest source of funding for the Club to ensure a competitive playing list and a high quality coaching panel.

The saddest part of this that there are sufficient supporters to achieve the number of members we need if we had only met our promises. If just two-thirds of those members who have lapsed in the last 2 years still believed, we could be looking at 45,000+ members right now.

This letter is not a call to arms to lapsed members. I understand youre not going to jump back on board as a member just because another new regime at the Club is promising things again. You need to see proof that things will improve because Im sure you couldnt face more great disappointment.

I am asking you though that you give us a chance to prove ourselves. If you were once a member then clearly you have a passion for the Melbourne Football Club. Please keep watching. At least come to some early games and decide for yourself. And if you then think you can trust us, please jump back on board, because the Melbourne Football Club does need you again.

If I could also ask you to forward this letter to any Melbourne supporter you may know who hasnt joined for 2014, I would appreciate your help.

Thank you in anticipation.

How about you join up as a member? From memory you've said you won't sign up until we get a proper social club which is never going to happen. It's the 21st century not the 50's anymore. You spend so much time on here so you obviously care about the club but refuse to support them over some petty nonsensical issue.

If I'm incorrect I apologise but I'm certain that's not the case.

No, it wasn't the social club, it was about getting Roos. & we did.

& those issues maybe petty to You, but they are not to me... they are seriously Important to my beliefs around the clubs issues. I'm not a supporter of Melbourne for you, or other members, I'm a supporter of the Dees for me. Because that's how I feel. And I truly think we need a Social Club in Richmond, on Swan.

so they're ya go.

no need any apologees

Exactly. Call it spin, marketing, promotion, whatever, the club has to actively court new members (and lapsed ones) and promote itself generally to the supporters. It's some poor sod's job to dream up new ways of saying the same old things year after year, and I reckon the format for this year's effort - the letter from Jackson - is as good as any.

What's the alternative? Complete silence from the club until we actually a few games. Yeh - I'm sure that'd go down well on here.

Geez PJ don't do anything to try to get the unsigned members back that's not important at all.

We all know winning is going to help but for goodness sake PJ is trying something and u cannot ridicule him for that.

Bloody hell u just can't win sometimes.

this side issue (in this thread) My post, has nothing to do with Peter Jacksons Open Lettter to the supporters/disenfranchised X members...

but once some people get a first thought in they're heads, they can't remove it, its lodged in there like a blocked artery.

my post was about not going back to the old SPIN of selling carp to members; but make friends with members thru honesty & trust, As they are trying to do in all area's of the club. Peter Jackson's Open letter was a great start.

my post was to 'NOT' step back from this standard he's Set... even if I didn't write it clearly at all, at that time.

I for One, am OVER the old spin doctoring from the club,,,, & from all electronic media forms for that matter. I find I'm turning them All off, & started to listen to ABC Digg/Jazz, SBS radio, & ABC TV.

but now the blue rinse Libs here of this, they'll no doubt bristle the eyebrows, & make plans to sell WYL's ABC job down the river to Jamie Packer @ Southbank... now Jamie's got his blue ribbon Sydney waterfront Casino underway.
