Somewhat belated I know, but there's a name on the playing list from Sunday's Under 18 Australian Under 18 Championship game that piqued my interest.

Joshua Hone.

Melbourne had a player named David Hone who was with us for only one season (circa 1969 or 70). He was a very good backman and I think might have come as a more mature age recruit. Left after only one very promising season. It's an unusual name and I thought he could be related.

I was at the game on Saturday and Jared Hardisty and Waterman were the most impressive of their mids, on Saturday's game I would be putting a line through taking Jarred Pickett in the first round, flashy with very low workrate

Based on what I’ve seen from him over the last couple of years, I think he’ll dispel those doubts over the course of the season.

On sheer ability Petracca is among the first few in the draft, and I think his competitiveness and ability to win one on one contests will probably see him selected quite early come November. He has good skills for a contested ball winner, and I can see him developing into a Tom Rockliff type down the line.

Pennant, i was told by a mate who essentially identifies talent for North Melbourne that the two lacked athletic ability as mids but made up for it in footy smarts, he felt both were very much inside players and limited to that, what are your thoughts?

obviously the ability to win the ball and effect clearances is one thing, but for 2 players alone to win 16 clearances and the team to only score 20 points makes me wonder about

a. the quality of the delivery forward

b. the quality of the forwards

c. the quality of the metro defence

I agree, certainly believe he has the ability to either develop the tank of a midfielder or play a high half forward role, i see him as one of the players in the draft with superstar potential but i don't expect him to make an immediate impact, very much a jake Stringer type project player.

I have to ask why are you on a footy forum talking about footy and interested in the draft yet your only watch Melbourne games. Considering how poor we've been on late that's an impressive level of dedication!

But yes. Beau Waters is a hard as nails tough back pocket/flanker, Sam Mayes is a smooth moving, skillful utility who can play half forward, half back, wing and probably eventually midfield. So if a player is compared to both of them then that's impossible to know what he does well or not.

The two I've read and seen on that list the most are Hugh Goddard and Jake Lever. Goddard is your prototypical tall developing prospect. He's got all the physical and footballing tools the question is just whether he really leaps out and dominates games. But he has skills and athleticism and you could put him half back or half forward. He probably reminds me of Lachie Henderson in that he'll end up a good player at a minimum. I'd say we'd be super keen if Frawley left and he was around and we had pick 3-6. Lever you'd like to see grow just a bit to 195cm so he's the right size but he's a natural key defender. Just one of those kids who's way ahead of the others his age at defending. But he's done a knee and missed this year. But he's like Col Garland as just a quality half back who will stop goals and get the ball going the other way. Whether you'd use a top pick on a guy coming off a knee who might be undersized and just a half back is another question.

I used to live Footy, read all the papers sports pages inside out, went to games weekly & watched nearly all on TV for 20 odd years. Recording & studying them & listening to all the experts like Matthews, McClure, Barass, Lyon, Roos, etc, & players etc.

...after 2007 I started going to U-18 games watching the TAC cup matches & the NAB AFL U18 Champs games for a few years, until I thought we should be on our way.

Then the flood, zones were happening, Sean & Jimma going, $cully, & general congested play, & our rebuild coming unstuck, I generally had started to lose interest in the game, as it is these days.

The only thing left for me was to see that we become a power Once again.

I refused to watch other games, because of the inequity of the AFL game, the money, the scheduling, the TV games not given to us, etc. Foxtel, I refuse to be a part of undermining free to Air TV.

so all in all, I think you can see I'm very much an AFL Mushroom nowadays. getting info now from this Internet forum, & by reading Melbourne articles online, & from the Sports media.

I won't give the power clubs my 'click on', on the internet.

Without the advent of Foxtel the free to air channels would treat viewers with a higher level of contempt than they do currently.

Pay TV has forced free to air into actually treating viewers like they mean something.

Foxtel's coverage of football leaves Channel 7 for dead and makes you realize what televised footy can be when done properly.

I was just about to reply that he is very much in the Rockliff mould, hard worker, accumulator without breakaway speed and could play TAC level as a forward probably even get by playing a key role due to his ferocious attack on the ball and clubs could make the mistake of overlooking him as an undersized kep position prospect
