Jnr, it just proves how much Victorian-based AFL news is irrelevant in Queensland. Voss made front page of the Courier Mail today. His "news" made pages 78-79, the Essendrug affair had something on page 78.

People (generally Victorians) think that all things AFL is big news across all states of Australia. Some on here have even suggested we announce sponsors at certain times to get maximum exposure. In Queensland, no one gives a toss what happens to Victorian clubs.

A maverick doctor should never happen if you have good Board protocols and governance. Essendon are clearly regretting that now. It was inept for a Board to extend the contract of Schwab when the club was under investigation. It raises the issue what changed in a couple of months that they see fit to sack the CEO they gave a 2 year contract to. I understand his payout was at least six months. Avoidable and unnecessary if the Board had acted properly.

There were Board issues and governance failures when Fevola contract was agreed to. The Chairman and a Director approved the deal with Board approval and circumvented agreed procedures. Both individuals rightly resigned for their part. Boss's golden boy status saved his goose but his list strategy was reckless, incompetent and damaging and would have clearly impacted his coaching outcome.

One of Voss,s other big failing was to continue to rely on a strategy based around getting the ball to an ageging Johnathon Brown at all costs. Living on past glories up there and an old boys club. Kept Voss for too long. Should have gone two years ago.

I think Vossy might be a decent head coach. I believe the players were with him for the most part (Daniel Bradshaw and Michael Rischitelli definitely weren't at the end). If he told you he knew how to make you a winner or Mark Neeld, who would you believe could do so?

It might seem harsh on an individual but Melbourne shouldn't rule out Voss as a candidate but he should be nowhere near the top of the list. I would actually be a little more enthusiastic about him now than others were 5 years ago (I remember those incessant GET VOSS NOW!! threads on the 'Ology). He made one HUGE mistake and if he hasn't learnt from it, I would be suprised. That being said, he still doesn't have the track record of a Choco Williams or Rocket Eade (my personal choice).

To me he should be right up there in our thinking for next year because he has had great success developing his midfield - Rockliff, Redden, Rich and more recently Mayes and Hanley.

He would be instantly respected by our players and he has charisma and leadership abilities - something that puts him ahead of Eade.

The two things I'd want to check out are:

1) It was reported that some players were ante him - if it's just guys like Polec who aren't getting a game then its understandable but report suggested Rockliff wasn't happy, so I would think our club should find out why.

2) What is his game plan - the Lions seem to like to go up the corridor and when they play well they can upset good teams, but often they lose to weakish sides. is that because they persist with going up the middle and get caught out on counterattack etc?

It's amazing that a guy that coached a side to beat Geelong when they where nearly 10 goals down only 3 weeks ago got the ass, I would say that Roos was locked in more than 3 months ago, you would have to think that PJ would have Voss on his list now, the guys not the best going around but he was great on field leader and the Lions would want to hope that Roos improves them dramatically because there supporters think of him like we do with Robbie Flower, IMO the Lions where tracking well and apart from the Fevola trade I thought they recruited well, I would have no problem with Voss coaching Melbourne.

I kind of thought Voss would have been well liked and respected amongst the playing group but reports today suggest there was some tension between him and some players (Rockliff was mentioned).

So it will be interesting to see how Brisbane respond to the sacking. Is it possible the Lions will be a bit of a mess this week and GWS could snag a win? Could this sacking put us in danger of winning another spoon?

I suspect we can rest easy in the abilities of Sheedy to secure a loss for GWS.

Take the Fevola debacle aside and the Lions have traded/drafted pretty bloody well recently. He cops a lot of stick (rightly so) for that trading period but Staker and Raines have been very good for them.

They have Rich, Redden, Rockliffe, Mayes, Harwood, Polec, Leuenberger, Hanley, Zorko, and Beams running through that midfield - pretty bloody good considering they are all pretty much under 21/22. They need to find a key forward though - I think they will chase a big name player now that Black and Brown's salary could be off the books come the end of the year.

Actually this article does as it quotes directly what Roos has stated on record to the paper. Jon Ralph may be loose with pieces that have speculation and opinion but when you directly quote a person you have to get it right or else there could be consequences. So unless Paul Roos has come out and said that what was written in the paper was incorrect you can be sure the weight of the piece is quite good.
