An extra million on the salary cap would assist providing the AFL provided the AFL came up with the money (1/2 of which they ripped of us in any case)!

The mini draft was designed and inteded for GWS to top up their list with quality mature players and what did they end up doing? All they accepted for them was draft picks. They took the Suns' first pick each time for O'Meara and Martin. They took Adelaide's first pick for Crouch. They also took Melbourne's first pick and their second for Hogan and Barry.

So if the mini draft is going to be used to stockpile more picks there is no use ... might as well give clubs priority picks. Perhaps they just shouldn't give priority picks in the first round any more. Second round maximum which might entice a few more clubs to on trade them or they can use them to pick up a kid with out upsetting the rest of the competition too much either

This stat goes back to 1999. So that means in the last 14 years, we yesterday recorded the lowest amount of forward entries by a team.

The AFL said they will still give PP's or help according to the results of a couple of years at their discretion. Our position is far worse and much longer.

No one can mount a stronger case than us for help.

To not give that help to us, means effectively no club can ever get that help. I don't think the AFL wants to leave itself in that position in the future.

As to the help, a PP will give us a young kid. Look at yesterdays game, another young kid wouldn't have helped against the Cats big bodies.

Does that mean the AFL looks at different help? Maybe.

We have mentioned a mini draft situation before and a couple of mini draft selections are different, as they don't affect this draft and don't add extra picks to next year's. They also remove most of the other club's complaints about compromising the draft.

They also allow for trading for experienced players, plus draft position improvement. That can produce quicker results. That is clearly what the AFL would want, an immediate impact.

Last years mini draft were worth a top 3 draft pick, so what level quality of experienced players can we get for that?

Genuine stars are off limits, and would potentially go to gws for pick 1 anyway. So we are looking at second tier players.

I'd be happy to do it for a Taylor Adams or another young potential from expansion franchises, or would be interested in packaging it with pick 20 to get a better than second tier.

'Redleg', the only problem I see with a mini draft is I'm not sure what clubs will be willing to give up to get the player. We might be better off taking the kids now and developing for the future. There would need to be some kind of fall back position if the right players are not put up.

One thing is for sure, we do need draft assistance now.

Salary cap concessions should be the equalising measure, because it allows teams who are struggling to get players who know how to lead the club forward. The Suns are doing well now in large part because of Gary Ablett's on-field leadership, which they would never have been able to get without their salary bonus.

The draft should always be run from 18th to 1st, and all other equalising measures should be salary cap concessions.

It could've been the problem in recent history though, as I consider Schwab to have been a supporter who held an integral position at the club, not being able to help himself getting involved where his capabilities and title dictate that he shouldn't.

Its not pointless if we trade for an established player, thats the only reason why we never climbed the ladder, after Strauss 17 and Blease pick 19 where targeted picks like Tapscott and Gysberts shouldv been traded for established players, theres no point getting another kid.
