The Trade/Draft Rumour Mill

Featured Replies

Sadly we drafted the 'bull' himself Luke Tapscott, and he's proved to be just as useless as the skinny kids. I hope all the Melbourne drafters completely ignore the past. Don't rule out skinny kids, fat kids, red heads or women.. Pick who Paul and his trusted rate will develop into an a-game player. Whoever they back, I'll support....

At least until Round 1 :)

Well obviously just because you are well built doesn't mean you are going to be an instant success at AFL level, but for what we need (midfield grunt) there is a better chance of finding that with someone who has the build to back that.

Not sure what Tapscott was before we drafted him, a high midfielder - a Sylvia type? Needed an out and out mid

Watching Fyfe is a tease, as he is the perfect example of size doesn't matter and comparing him to Morton makes me weep. I think we are a little gun shy on drafting the skinny kids now because every skinny kid we draft is an utter failure. It is the reason why I want to draft a ready to go "bull" because we are in no position to gamble on another stick insect at this point in time.

Tapscott was built like a brick outhouse when we recruited him, but unfortunately hasn't set the world on fire as yet.

Gunstan from Hawks is also another - very little of him, but the kid kicked a/se on Saturday!

Still, I can understand why people are against it after Morton.

Everyone references Tapscott because I used the word "bull" haha

Okay....one more point on the 'skinny' debate and I'm done.

Gunston's build and Fyfe's build is no way like Gysbert's or Morton's - look at the size of their thighs, that allows them strength in the hips.

Secondly, Fyfe and Gunston are elite runners and extremely, extremely fit!

Thirdly, their attitude is one where they work hard to establish space and rarely get caught.

Morton and Gysberts? Pffft! Gimme a break!!

well one things for sure, we have to recruit the players the coach & his development team believe they can work with to improve.

Yes he may say hello but he also played in an era that is not as taxing on the younger bodies as the afl is now. If you go by that then Cale Morton would have been a superstar

No, Robbie had a few things going for him that Cale didn't. He was a real football player, he had sublime skills and a massive heart. It doesn't matter what era you play in these things always win out.

I think it's clear that it is more about application, competitiveness and hardness at the contest rather than build.

Look at Josh Hunt, 100KG and soft as butter.

I think it all comes down to your third point; attitude. Morton supposedly had elite fitness, size of thighs and strenth in the hips can be trained into them if they had a good attitude in the gym and training track. It was a fighting spirit that Gysberts and Morton lacked. I mean how often did we hear about Morton's conquests on the Fifa game on playstation. Get a kick on the real field that you actually play on you hack.

Maybe - but I'd still say that from a distance - even if he "walked" through me I dont think I would wake up for a week.

I'd really hope we talk to Zaharakis.

the others I haven't taken much note of?

St Kilda has been in Myers ear, promised midfield time, which he wants. Tall mid in fyfe model, but hasn't come past being a HBF utility. Monster kick and just needs to opportunity for time in middle and can be very good!

Zaharakis everyone knows, and kommer is a [censored], hack skills are runs around trying to hit people, doesn't even do it with the class of mitch Robinson, just squeals when he gets hit back! Myers and Zaha would be instant improvements

should have chased the Olympic dream instead, distance runner, or high jump?

100 metre dash, Lade at starting line for inspiration lol

myers in the middle? OK thats my out of the square thinking.

I've really gotta get some fun back & start to freshen up. I'm getting stale as. losing interest.

I remember myers from the TAC cup, but now can't picture him.

thanks for the notes brey9186.

One player who hasn't been mentioned here that I think if he can get it together is Shaun Higgins. Would not cost much due to his injuries second round pick maybe? Is skilled and this year's injury was just unlucky not soft tissue or anything and I think he would be a good fit for us

Can hardly stay on the park.

Another I reckon will be offloaded is Gumbleton, but he too is injury prone.

As I stated this season's injury was just so unlucky nothing to say his previous injuries are still lingering. In fact almost a season out of the game would allow him to get his entire body right and strengthen the areas that needed it. Gumbleton is gone they have Daniher now who is similair Freo I can almost guarantee will get him.

Thing is with Higgins he's still only 25 not 26 until next year. I honestly think he is worth a shot

Make no mistake, I like him as a crumbing forward, but there have no been no murmurings of him going anywhere.

Yeah I know but I think that is in part due to the fact that he didn't play this year so he has slipped under the radar of clubs looking at recruiting. 99% chance no one will look at him but I just thought I would float the idea out there

cant believe wed be dumb enough to give pick 2 fo shaw. would be a ridiculously dumb trade
Mahoney talked about 3 or 4 players identified for pick 2. Id be amazed if pick 2 was one of those

Thankfully its jay clark

If we give pick 2 to Collingwood for Heath Shaw I will legit lose my mind. Even getting pick 10 from them aswell is not worth it.

He was prone to snapping at a successful club playing for Melbourne might kill him.

You are right it's about attitude, development, work ethic and footballing skills. It's not at all about how many kg's of muscle they carry when they are 18, just finished most of their growing, not even finished puberty and really shouldn't be doing any heavy weights training. Port Adelaide fitness guru Darren Burgess doesn't even let his first year draftees do weights. He builds up their fitness and core strength first and that seemed to go ok for Oli Wines, Jake Neade and Sam Colquhoun.

You might mean under 18 champs. Hard to remember him in a competition he didn't play in. He's been asking for more midfield time for years at the bombers and can find the footy. Has a big heavy build and waddles around a bit but sure can roost the footy. I wonder if he has the quickness in close to win clearances though. But Jobe Watson used to move like a boulder but now glides through stoppages using his bulk, strength and quick first step.

if we were to go after Shaun Higgins i would only offer a 3rd rnd pick. Not worth a 2nd rounder. I think the reputation he had when drafted has stuck in peoples minds, but he very rarely produces it when he's on the park

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
