Good luck to the lad . Not for us.

It really is incredible how wrong everyone got this. He wasn’t a speculative pick, and at some stages in Tac Cup rated the 2nd best player in the draft.

wines was always touted as the player Melbourne were going to draft-he fitted our needs at the time

After what can only be described as a disappointing start to the kid's career and had most of us questioning this selection things seem to be turning around with this kid. His last two games have seen him getting involved and finding plenty of footy. Now I don't want to moz the boy however his kicking in heavy traffic is elite and reminds me so much of Trapper(TJ). Hogan, Mitch, Dawes, Watts and Howe will love this kid over the next decade. Still early days however I am starting to see glimpes of why he went so high in the draft. Definite silver service weapon in the making.

Toump never asked to come to us or be picked at number 4.

He was pretty emblematic of what was wrong with us at the time.

We had been criticized for picking a bunch of callow, frail 18 year olds in the draft who were speculative. Despite blokes like Watts, Gysberts and Morton not coming on, we chose yet another one. Not only that, we had him in the senior team round one of his debut year. I had never heard anything about him having a great pre season or putting in a blinder during the scratch matches. The Cameron Schwab mindlock was still on the place which stated "Get games into the high draft picks if they are ready or not."

We should never have picked him because we clearly needed more senior grunt (which senior player would have wanted to come to us would have been up for serious debate) and he was probably never going to be a world beater at best but our environment wasn't the best either.

It never ceases to amaze me when supporters criticise players who don't succeed as if those players  deliberately set out not just to fail, but to damage the club in the process. The drafting process is a modern day form of indentured servitude. And given clubs are not obliged to show loyalty to players, I also wonder why supporters get upset when players choose to leave. Toumpas didn't choose to come to us and I think he tried his best when he was here. That it didn't work out is a fact. No-one needs to be blamed.

I think most just vent over missed opportunities and really they are blaming the recruiters, not the recruits.

I'm criticising how soft he was at Melbourne, yes he didn't choose to come here but hey if you're soft on the field you'll cop it. I can't name one soft player in our side now

Tough gig recruiting

Though the toughest part is dealing with people who seem to think that it's anything more than informed guesswork.

Decision making under uncertainty.

It just goes to show how speculative drafting 18 y.o's is. This is the 2012 draft list and there are some good footballers but at this stage no-one I would classify as a champion.

Whitfield has finally shown his wares. O'Rourke is in hawks 2nds and like Toumpas ready to be delisted. Plowman is with the Blues & Stringer the Dons. Picks 6 to 11 have done OK. I believe the pick of that crop is Grundy taken at 19 and Viney father and son at 26.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons return to the MCG wounded, undermanned and desperate. Still searching for their first win of the season, Melbourne faces a daunting task against the Fremantle Dockers. With key pillars missing at both ends of the ground, the Dees must find a way to rise above the adversity and ignite their season before it slips way beyond reach. Will today be the spark that turns it all around, or are we staring down the barrel of a 0–6 start?

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.
